LG makes battery design process faster

LGES proudly announced Sunday the successful development of its new AI solution, “Optimal Cell Design AI Recommendation Model,” that promises to cut the battery cell design process from two weeks to just a day, The Korea Herald reported.

This major development leverages generative AI to design battery cells tailored to client’s preferences and needs in just about 24 hours.

For context, designing batteries tend to take a substantial amount of time. In addition, the proficiency of the designer is very crucial to the procedure. A design usually takes several prototypes to satisfy the client’s requested specifications in terms of capacity, energy density and resistance, etc.

In response, LGES developed the new AI-powered battery designer to significantly streamline this initial process crucial to battery production.

“By incorporating AI technology into cell design, which determines battery performance, we will provide overwhelming product competitiveness and differentiated customer value.”

LG’s AI-powered battery design solution

LGES claims to have trained this innovative AI-powered battery design system in 100,000 design cases using its accumulated data from the past 30 years.

According to an unnamed LGES representative’s statement, the system ensures consistent, high-quality designs for clients at an extremely rapid pace.

“The biggest advantage is that cell design can be achieved at a consistent level and speed, regardless of the designer’s proficiency.”

LGES reportedly plans to apply this cutting-edge AI tool to the battery module and pack design in the future.

Significance

Battery cell designs will play a crucial role in the global tech industry amid the progressive shift to clean energy and electric mobility.

The automotive market alone has started to rely substantially on the battery industry to power the emerging electrified vehicles worldwide. The energy storage market is also witnessing rapid growth as the industry looks for solutions to support the electric grid amid the growing number of EVs on the roads.

All that said, LGES’ AI-powered battery design solution will undoubtedly emerge as a crucial tool to support the expected demand surge for battery products. The solution is currently in the trial phase, with the potential to reach LGES’ in-house cell development system by October 2024.
