Toyota-owned luxury brand Lexus is set to introduce its new-gen electric car technology as part of the company’s efforts to catch up in the EV industry, Drive reports. In a roundtable interview, Lexus’ global boss noted that the brand “will be the explorer” of Toyota’s EV technology.
However, it still intends to continue producing hybrid models like its parent company.
Lexus’ electrification plan
Lexus strongly reflects Toyota’s electrification strategy, with plans to shift away from petrol-powered models. However, it refuses to halt the production of its HEV models as Toyota believes multiple approaches still exist to cut vehicle emissions apart from all-electric models.
Toyota and Lexus’ hybrid technology has apparently reduced emissions of more than 20 million vehicles by 50% in the past 20 years.
Toyota’s strong optimism regarding hybrid technology significantly impeded its growth in the rapidly growing EV market. Lexus also claims that not all countries are prepared to join the e-mobility shift. Therefore, it leverages its hybrid models to bridge the gap.
Notably, Lexus aims to become an all-electric brand by 2035. However, it appears that traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and hybrids will remain in its current plans.
“(Lexus is) taking both pathways to eventually achieve 100 per cent carbon neutrality. We have the Toyota corporate vision … to determine when and whether or not we want to stop development of (petrol) engines. If you look at the global situation, we cannot 100 per cent definitely say (electric vehicle technology) is the only solution to the current environmental issues. In some regions of the world, (electric cars) may still not be a convenient solution (for low-emissions motoring).
Takashi Watanabe, Lexus International President
Mr. Watanabe further asserted that the brand will be crucial to Toyota’s EV technology development.
What’s most critical is the role each and every brand under the Toyota Corporation plays in achieving carbon neutrality.
“Toyota is a brand which embarks on multiple pathways to provide an optimum solution to people in all different parts of the world … with a diversified range of options. If you look at this at Toyota’s corporate level, there is no way we are going to immediately discontinue development of (petrol engine) development. Some regions in the world are using (petrol and hybrid) technology to drive or get closer to carbon neutrality … which is much more effective (in their particular circumstances).
The role Lexus will play in Toyota is to develop (electric vehicle) technology and we will push the boundaries so we can have a new way of car-making.”

Lexus plans to reveal a new e-sedan in Tokyo
Lexus will reportedly debut a new electric sedan featuring its next-gen technology at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show in October.
Drive suggests the model could be a “spiritual successor to the Lexus IS.” The new e-sedan will apparently bring the brand and its parent company near its goal of competing with Tesla’s EV models.
Mr. Watanabe omitted to share key details about the new electric model. He encouraged interested customers and EV enthusiasts to wait for the motor show next month.
Lexus’ electrification strategy will undoubtedly aid Toyota in catching up in the global electric vehicle industry. However, its refusal to focus on battery-electric models may continue to impede its full advancement.
