A new video has leaked showing the Tesla Cybertruck’s impressive four-wheel steering in action, which gives us the best look at the feature yet.
For those unaware, rear-wheel steering is rapidly becoming a must-have function for upcoming electric pickup trucks.
Rear-wheel steering, also known as four-wheel steering, is the ability to steer the rear axle to a lesser degree than the front wheel, resulting in a tighter and more precise turning radius.
4-wheel steering offerings – “Crab Mode”
GMC kicked off the dance by demonstrating “crab mode,” which uses rear-wheel steering on the Hummer EV.
Many other car manufacturers have since announced rear-wheel steering. Tesla followed suit in 2021, declaring that the Cybertruck would be capable.
Tesla Cybertruck Announcement
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company was exploring the rear-wheel steering to the Cybertruck last summer.
“We’re adding rear-wheel steering, so it can do tight turns and maneuver with high agility.”
Tesla
According to Electrek, they saw a brief video of the Cybertruck demonstrating the feature last year. Now we have a much better look, kudos to Twitter user TokyoTesla.
They uploaded a much longer video of the Cybertruck that demonstrated the four-wheel steering capability more clearly:
The rear wheels are actively turning in the video, confirming the electric pickup truck’s rear-wheel steering.
Musk responded to the video without addressing the feature.
“It is a tough car to build, unlike any other, but, as stated publicly, Cybertruck production starts this year.”
CEO Elon Musk
Expect Cybertruck deliveries by 2024
Tesla recently stated that it intends to begin production of the Cybertruck this summer. However, significant deliveries should not be expected until 2024, when the carmaker will speed up volume production.
The carmaker also confirmed the creation of a new fleet of Cybertruck Beta prototypes. In fact, one was spotted earlier this week in Palo Alto.
It needs to be clarified whether this new video depicts a beta prototype or an alpha prototype, given the huge side mirror and lack of a tonneau cover.
The video also seems to have been shot at Gigafactory Texas, possibly at the most recent event in which the Cybertruck was featured.
Nonetheless, it’s the best look yet at the Cybertruck’s rear-wheel steering. It will be exciting to see if Tesla uses the capacity to implement new features, such as Rivian’s “tank turn” or GMC’s “crab walk.”
