New Delhi, March 24, 2023: India has hit a remarkable milestone in its drive towards sustainable transportation. According to the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, the number of electric vehicles registered in the country has surpassed an impressive 2.78 lakh mark in the current calendar year.

The announcement comes as a beacon of hope for environmentalists, who have long advocated for adopting cleaner modes of transport to curb air pollution and mitigate the effects of climate change. The surge in electric vehicle registrations signifies a positive shift towards a more sustainable and greener future for India.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been taking several initiatives to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, including tax incentives, subsidies, and the development of charging infrastructure. These efforts have helped to encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles and contribute to the nation’s ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions.

As India continues to march towards a sustainable future, the rise of electric vehicles is a promising sign that the country is on the right path towards a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for all.

Parliament session witnesses Nitin Gadkari’s emphasis on the importance of EV registration data for the government’s 2030 target

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha through a written reply that the Vahan portal’s data on electric vehicle (EV) registration for Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh is only partially included, as the two states are in the process of migrating to the portal. Additionally, the Vahan portal has no data available on EV registration for Telangana and Lakshadweep. The reply came in response to a query on the number of EVs registered across the country. The Vahan portal is an online platform for vehicle registration and related services. The government has been making efforts to promote EV adoption in the country through various initiatives. The data on EV registration is crucial for monitoring the progress towards achieving the government’s target of 30% electric vehicle penetration by 2030.

According to the data, the registration of electric vehicles (EVs) in India has grown exponentially, with the numbers skyrocketing from 3, 29,808 in 2021 to 10 20,679 in 2022.

India’s National Highways Authority (NHAI) has set its sights on the development of wayside amenities (WSAs) every 30-40 kilometres across brownfield national highways and greenfield expressways, according to a statement made by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Gadkari also revealed that 156 WSAs have already been awarded to date as the NHAI moves to improve the quality of its road network.

In an effort to encourage ease of doing business for private investors, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has implemented measures to simplify the process of setting up automated testing stations and registered vehicle scrapping facilities. According to the Union Minister, applications for the grant of registration certificate are now being facilitated through the National Single Window System (NSWS), with 18 states/UTs currently accepting applications for the Voluntary Vehicle-Fleet Modernisation Programme (V-VMP) via the system.
