Yesterday, Tesla confirmed a massive $3.6 billion investment in Gigafactory Nevada.

Elon Musk made some interesting statements about the new 4680 battery cell plant, which will be stored inside the same roof as the upcoming Tesla Semi production facility as part of an expanded Gigafactory Nevada complex, during a presentation at the plant in the presence of Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo.

According to Elon Musk, the two recently launched plants are part of Gigafactory Nevada’s Phase 2 expansion.

In a short blog post on its website, Tesla stated that the new 4680 battery cell production line would have an initial yearly capacity of 100 Gigawatt-hours (GWh), covering an annual output of 1.5 million light-duty electric vehicles.

The facility can produce up to 500 GWh yearly

Elon Musk explained this during the presentation and revealed that the 4680-cell manufacturing facility in Nevada could produce up to 500 GWh per year in the long run.

WE’RE GOING TO DO OUR HIGH VOLUME SEMI-TRUCK MANUFACTURING HERE, AND WE’RE ALSO GOING TO ADD 100 GIGAWATT-HOURS OF TESLA 4680 CELL MANUFACTURING HERE. AND THAT’S JUST THE START. I THINK LONG TERM, WE MAY DO AS MUCH AS 500 GIGAWATT-HOURS, BUT THIS INCREMENT IS 100 GIGAWATT-HOURS. YEAH, SO IT’S A HUGELY IMPORTANT GAME-CHANGER

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla stated on the manufacturing facility in Nevada

Tesla said: 4680 battery has survived the most difficult period of mass production. This means that the 4680 battery will be mass produced and installed in cars in the future, and the production cost of Tesla cars will fall again (domestic media)$TSLA #tesla

However, he should have clarified what long-term means in this context. The executive also stated that the 4680 cells manufactured at the new Gigafactory Nevada facility would be used for purposes other than electric vehicles. According to Musk, Tesla Energy’s battery storage products will receive a portion of the production.

Tesla will use 4680 cylindrical cells in the future

Musk means that Tesla’s new 4680 cylindrical cells will be used in future battery storage products such as the Megapack and Powerwall home batteries.

WE EXPECT THE NEW CELL FACTORY TO PRODUCE AT LEAST 100 GIGAWATT-HOURS. AND THAT’S REALLY JUST TO BEGIN WITH. LONG TERM, TESLA IS AIMING TO PRODUCE WELL OVER 1,000 GIGAWATT-HOURS, POSSIBLY 2,000 OR 3,000. SO THIS REALLY IS JUST THE START. AND THAT’S EQUIVALENT TO 1.5 MILLION ADDITIONAL MODEL 3/Y VEHICLES, AND WE’LL ALSO BE USING 4680 FOR STATIONARY STORAGE AS WELL. AND TO BE CLEAR, THIS IS IN ADDITION TO OUR SUPPLIERS

It is still being determined whether Musk’s goal for Tesla to generate well over 1,000 GWh per year includes production from Gigafactory Nevada, Gigafactory Texas, Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, and other battery cell plants that will introduce in the future.
