Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has confirmed that the company is developing a new fully electric model in addition to current offerings, Giulia and Stelvio for the US market.
Imparato told Automotive News on the sidelines of the Tonale compact crossover’s launch in Japan that Alfa Romeo requires such a model to be successful in the US, adding that it will arrive around 2027.
We will have to be in the E-segment in North America. We are working on that
Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo stated on company’s new vehicles
Without going into specifics, Alfa Romeo’s CEO stated. He pointed out that a D-segment entry in the Giulia sedan caps off the brand’s US lineup.
However, according to Imparato, Alfa Romeo needs something larger and all-electric to increase sales in North America. The executive would not reveal the EV’s body style but noted that it does not have to be a crossover.
According to him, the transition to EVs places a premium on aerodynamics, so automakers are beginning to favor sedans or more creative twists on traditional body styles. Imparato also stated that the vehicle’s body shape and design would be determined next year.
Full-electric crossover for its next flagship
Interestingly, Imparato stated in April 2022 that Alfa Romeo’s next flagship would be a full-electric crossover larger than the Stelvio by 2027, describing it at the time as a BMW X5 competitor. The fact that Imparato now says the forthcoming EV does not have to be a crossover suggests a shift in strategy.
In addition, Imparato highlighted technical specs for the brand’s upcoming lineup of battery-electric vehicles, indicating that Alfa Romeo will make sportiness the hallmark of its EVs.
I need to transfer the concept of performance. We will be a high-performance EV
Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo stated on company’s new vehicles
Imparato explained. He stated that Alfa Romeo EVs would have high-speed 800-volt charging, with charging times of up to 18 minutes.
Except for the Quadrifoglio performance versions, which will have around 1,000 horsepower, the max power will range between 350 and 800 horsepower. These figures indicate that the Quadrifoglio variant may share the efficient EV platform with Dodge‘s forthcoming electric muscle car.
Alfa Romeo’s hybrid in 2024
Alfa Romeo’s first battery-electric model, which will also be available as a hybrid, will debut in 2024. The brand’s first dedicated EV will arrive in 2025. By 2027, when the E-segment model is expected to arrive, Alfa Romeo will only sell fully electric vehicles – including in the United States.
Imparato stated that the new E-segment EV will assist Alfa Romeo in meeting its goal of generating 40% of worldwide sales from outside Europe by 2030, up from 18% in 2021.
