Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated fuel cell system brand HTWO signed a partnership with Enginius, a German carmaker Faun Group subsidiary, to provide fuel cell systems for the hydrogen-powered commercial trucks’ mass production, according to Inceptive Mind.
In a three-year deal, the company will provide over 1,000 hydrogen fuel-cell systems to a German environment-friendly vehicle maker.
HTWO’s fuel cell electric vehicle technology
HTWO’s fuel cell electric vehicle technology is well established through Hyundai’s NEXO FCEV, which sold more than 30,000 units worldwide.
In addition, HTWO’s 90-kW fuel cell system will be paired with Enginius chassis to offer zero-emission power for waste collection and medium cargo trucks for intra-city goods delivery.
Enginius plans to start setting Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel-cell systems in its Citypower cargo trucks and Bluepower garbage in the second half of next year.
Notably, Faun Group is Europe’s first truck manufacturer with EU-type approval for fuel-cell electric vehicles. It has supplied 60 Bluepower waste collection trucks to European waste disposal companies.
CITYPOWER medium cargo truck
The CITYPOWER medium cargo truck, which ENGINIUS unveiled at the 2022 IAA Transportation, will come with HTWO’s fuel cell system for field testing in 2024, and series production is scheduled to start in 2025.
This strategic partnership with Enginius marks yet another significant milestone in HTWO’s mission to free humanity from fossil fuel dependency in the commercial vehicle market.
Taewon Lim, Executive Vice President of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Business Center at Hyundai Motor Group
Lim adds that this is the first time they are supplying their fuel cell system to another OEM at a large scale. Enginius’ initial fleet of over 1,100 fuel cell trucks will represent Hyundai’s fuel cell system business’ significant expansion.
Moreover, the two companies anticipate collaborating further on environmentally friendly drivetrain solutions for commercial vehicles in the mid- to long-term.
