South Korean legacy automaker Hyundai has just gained another recognition in the US, with six of its models dominating the fueleconomy.gov’s top 10 most fuel-efficient EVs list in 2024.

Ranking methodology

According to the fueleconomy.gov website, the list ranked the electric vehicle models based on their EPA combined city/highway rating. 

The EPA rates battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in Miles Per Gallon equivalent (MPGe), where 33.7 kWh is equivalent to one gallon of gasoline. 

Without further ado, below is the list of the top 10 most fuel-efficient EVs in 2024:

As you can see in the table, various configurations of the popular IONIQ 6, IONIQ 5, and Kona Electric are in the top 10 list of fueleconomy.gov.

The 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 6 Long Range RWD equipped with 20″ wheels topped the rankings with a combined 140 MPGe rating.

The model’s Standard Range RWD trim landed third with a combined 135 MPGe rating.

Other 2024 Hyundai EVs included in the list are as follows: IONIQ 6 Long Range AWD 18″ wheels (#5 with 121 MPGe), IONIQ 6 LR RWD 20″ wheels (#7 with 117 MPGe), Kona Electric LR (#8 with 116 MPGe), and IONIQ 5 LR RWD (#10 with 114 MPGe).

The 2024 Kia EV6 LR RWD and EV6 Standard Range RWD both landed in the seventh spot, along with the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 LR RWD w/ 20″ Wheels) with a 117 MPGe rating.

Other four non-Hyundai 2024 models to make the list include the Lucid Air Pure RWD 19″ wheels, Air Pure RWD 20″ wheels, BMW i4 eDrive35 Gran Groupe, and the Polestar 2 Single Motor 19″ wheels. 

Hyundai’s impressive EV sales in the US – Q1 2024

Hyundai Motor, including its Kia brand, overthrew Ford and General Motors as the second-top-selling electric vehicle automaker in the US market in the first quarter of 2024.

The South Korean group sold more than 18,500 electric vehicles in the first quarter, including its IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 EVs, Kia EV6, and EV9. It excludes the Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, and Genesis EVs, potentially boosting sales to more than 30,000.

Hyundai’s dominance in the top 10 most fuel-efficient EVs list highlights its headway against other rivals when it comes to technology. Such recognition can enable the South Korean automaker to attract more customers, especially those who prioritize efficieny.
