Hyundai Motor Company, which consists of the Hyundai and Genesis brands, saw a year-on-year global car sales growth of 8.4% to 306,296 units.
Combined plug-in car sales – January 2023
Hyundai and Genesis’ plug-in cars reported total wholesale shipments of 20,718, representing a YoY growth of 87%. It must be noted that the subjected wholesale shipments in this context are intricately connected to production. Electrek estimated that figure to be about 7% of the company’s total volume.
The report has also provided the following significant notes:

**The Hyundai sales report includes sales numbers from the plants in South Korea, Europe (Kona Electric and Tucson PHEV), Indonesia (Ioniq 5), and plants in China and India (both small numbers).”

As you can see in the table above, battery electric vehicle sales grew to 162% YoY with 18,106 units. Notably, that figure represents 6% of the overall volume.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid car sales saw a YoY decline of 37% to 2,612 units. As for the hydrogen fuel cell cars, it reported a 10% sales growth to 404 units.
For comparison, Hyundai Motor Company reported YoY sales growth of 45% to over 240,000 plug-in electric cars in 2022. Of that total, BEVs accounted for about 195,000 units, an increase of 56% YoY.
Hyundai plug-in electric car sales – January 2023
Hyundai reported a YoY wholesale shipment growth of 82% to 19,448 plug-in cars. Of that total, BEVs accounted for 19,448. Meanwhile, PHEVs declined 37% YoY to 2,612 units.

For comparison, Hyundai reported wholesale shipments of more than 221,000 plug-in electric cars. Of that total, BEVs accounted for 175,989 (up 44%).

Model results
Hyundai’s total plug-in car volume reached 7,307 units, representing a YoY growth of 248% in January 2023. Notably, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 continues to lead the automaker’s EV portfolio in sales with 7,307 units.
The Ioniq 5 is followed by the Kona Electric with 5,688 sales and Ioniq 6 with 3,841 sales. The bottom two are the Tucson PHEV (2,073) and Santa Fe PHEV (539).
Meanwhile, the FCEV Hyundai NEXO only sold 404 units last month.

The Ioniq 5 N will be part of Hyundai’s EV portfolio starting in 2023. Hyundai claims it will be “the company’s first high-performance EV, with details to be unveiled in the coming months.”
Genesis plug-in electric car sales – January 2023
Genesis reported YoY wholesale shipment growth of 221% to 1,270 GV60, GV70 EV, and G80 EV units. Of that total, the brand’s most popular model GV60 accounted for 973 units.
