South Korean legacy automaker Hyundai is getting closer to revealing its new IONIQ 9, its first three-row electric SUV. Before that happens, some spy photos and videos emerge to give us a glimpse of what we can expect from the new model, including its notably large and sleek body design.
Hyundai IONIQ 9 spied while testing on public streets
Hyundai initially introduced its first three-row e-SUV as the “SEVEN concept” at the 2021 LA Auto Show. Instead of arriving as the IONIQ 7, a source familiar with the matter previously claimed that it would use the IONIQ 9 moniker. The South Korean automaker has yet to verify the speculation, with a spokesperson saying, “More details will be shared on the next IONIQ model closer to launch.”
Car-focused YouTube channel Shorts Car shared a new spy video of the IONIQ 9 while testing on public streets. The electric SUV wears heavy camouflage, but its massive front and sleek headlights are still apparent. The shape of the electric SUV’s hood also seems way larger than the popular IONIQ 5.
Previous public appearance
A few months ago, The Korean Car Blog reported the spy video of the Hyundai IONIQ 9. It was sitting in a parking lot beside Kia’s three-row electric SUV, the EV9.
As per the reporter, the IONIQ 9 looked “fuller” up front with a lower A-pillar. It has a more sloped design with a less boxy build than the Kia EV9. The rear of the IONIQ 9 is much taller than the Kia three-row SUV.
Hyundai IONIQ 9 to ride on the E-GMP platform
According to the report, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 will share the same dedicated E-GMP platform with the Kia EV9. This cutting-edge platform offers the EV9 with a 42.8″ rear legroom, larger than the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes EQS, and three-row Range Rover P400.
Hyundai has already proved its competence in the global electric vehicle industry with its award-winning IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models. In the US, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 advanced to the top 6 of top-selling EVs with nearly 34,000 unit deliveries. The imminent arrival of the three-row IONIQ 9 will undoubtedly further boost the brand’s sales figures.
Hyundai is expected to start the new IONIQ 9 production in the first half of 2024. It will undergo production at the new $7.6 billion EV Metaplant in Georgia, enabling it to qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit. As per the report, US sales will start in mid-2025.
