South Korean automaker Hyundai’s award-winning Ioniq 6 has once again claimed the World Car of the Year Award, along with two top honors in other categories in 2023.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 records its second consecutive triple win
The 2023 World Car of the Year Award, powered by Brembo, granted Ioniq 6 the following awards live at the New York International Auto Show:
- 2023 World Car of the Year
- 2023 World Electric Vehicle
- 2023 World Car Design of the Year
Remarkably, these awards mark the automaker’s second successive triple win in the same categories, per the press release.
“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like Ioniq 6 to market.”
Jaehoon Chang, Hyundai Motor Company’s President, and CEO
Apart from that, SangYup Lee, Executive VP and Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center’s Head, won the 2023 World Car Person of the Year award.
Jurors and finalists
The winners were chosen by a jury of 100 renowned international automotive journalists from 32 nations. They received trophies designed by renowned auto designer Ian Callum.
They evaluated each candidate and then chose the winners by secret ballot. KPMG tallied the results of the voting.
Three finalist vehicles competed for the COTY award, with the Hyundai Ioniq 6 winning over the BMW X1/iX1 and Kia Niro. Initially, the jurors evaluated 30 vehicles from different brands worldwide before having the top three.
On the other hand, there was an initial entry list of 21 vehicles for the World Electric Vehicle category. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 beat the BMW i7 and the Lucid Air.
Lastly, the jurors initially had 78 vehicles to assess for the World Car Design of the Year award. Unsurprisingly, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 beat its co-finalists, Land Rover Range Rover and the Lucid Air.
“We always want to connect with customers on an emotional level and with the design of the IONIQ 6 we have created truly one of a kind. The daring streamliner styling combines strong emotional appeal with aerodynamic efficiency to give exceptional range.
Inside, we set-out to create a personal studio which offers the mindful space and calm functionality which, we believe, elevates EV design.”
