South Korean automaker Hyundai, through its North American arm, finally announced the official pricing for the 2024 Kona Electric on Monday.
As per the press release, the second-gen 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric further improves the qualities of the prior model year with a base price of just below $33,000.
Available variants
For the first time, Hyundai delivered two battery/powertrain configurations for the Kona Electric model.
The SE has a 48.6 kWh battery pack and a 99 kW electric motor, while the SEL features a battery with a 64.8 kWh capacity and a 150 kW electric motor.
The top-tier variant is equipped with a 150 kW electric motor and a battery pack of 64.8 kWh.
In hindsight, the prior model offered a 64 kWh battery configuration with an electric motor of 150 kW.
Pricing
As for the pricing, the 2024 SE variant has a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $32,675, excluding the destination charge of $1,335. According to InsideEVs, this amount is only $875 cheaper than the 2023 Model Year with a 64 kWh battery pack. The slight price decline may disappoint customers, given the smaller battery, less range, and less power.
The 2024 SEL variant will sell at an MSRP of $36,675 plus a $1,335 destination fee. It represents a 9.3% increase or $3,125 from the outgoing bigger battery configuration.
The top-tier Limited variant has a base price of $41,045 before the $1,335 destination fee. Refer to the table below:
Model | Base Price | Dest. Charge | Tax Credit | Effective Price |
2023 Hyundai Kona Electric (64 kWh) 17-inch | $33,550 | +$1,335 | N/A | $34,885 |
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SE (48.6 kWh) 17-inch | $32,675 | +$1,335 | N/A | $34,010 |
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SEL (64.8 kWh) 17-inch | $36,675 | +$1,335 | N/A | $38,010 |
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Limited (64.8 kWh) 17-in | $41,045 | +$1,335 | N/A | $42,380 |
However, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric variants do not qualify for the US federal tax credits of up to $7,500 due to the rules of origin. Nonetheless, customers can still access the incentive via the leasing loophole.
EPA-estimated range
The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric features CATL’s battery cells rather than LGES’ technology.
As you can see in the table below, the Kona Electric variants with the 64.8 kWh battery can enable an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 261 miles.
Meanwhile, the SE variant with a 48.6 kWh battery pack offers a maximum manufacturer-estimated driving range of up to 200 miles.
Model | Drive | Battery (kWh) | EPA Range |
2023 Hyundai Kona Electric (64 kWh) 17-inch | FWD | 64 | 258 mi |
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SE (48.6 kWh) 17-inch | FWD | 48.6 | 200 mi* |
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SEL (64.8 kWh) 17-inch | FWD | 64.8 | 261 mi |
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Limited (64.8 kWh) 17-inch | FWD | 64.8 | 261 mi |
For comparison, the 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric, with a 64 kWh battery pack, has a driving range of up to 258 miles.
For those interested in buying a 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric, it may be best to choose the SEL variant. Its price is about 12% higher ($4,000) but has 33.3% higher battery capacity and 30.5% EPA-estimated range. It also boasts a higher power capacity of 51.5% than the SE. It is better to exclude the Limited from the choices, considering that it has the same battery pack and range as the SEL but for a more expensive price.
