Honda to introduce an electric sports car to rival Tesla

Japanese legacy automaker Honda confirmed plans to join the upcoming Japan Mobility Show 2023 with some of its new developments, including an all-electric sports car concept model.

Honda disclosed in a press release that it will exhibit a wide range of automobiles, motorcycles, aircraft, power products, and other technologies at the prestigious auto show in Tokyo starting on October 25.

What’s currently known about the electric sports car?

Honda emphasized that the e-sports car concept model will offer customers a superior driving experience with its innovative technologies. It also noted the car’s sustainability and potential self-driving capability.

“The concept model of an electric sports car which will enable the driver to experience the pure joy of driving (driving pleasure) and transcend the constraints of time, even in the era of electrification for carbon neutrality and the popularization of automated driving technology. The joy of driving and distinctive individuality of this model will enable people to transcend their everyday life.”

Honda

Car also claims the model will utilize the company’s e:n electric platform and Type R badges. It will apparently advance as the second non-FWD model to feature the red moniker after the NSX Type-R.

Apart from that, Honda omitted to share more details about the electric sports car. However, some reports suggest the model will compete with Tesla’s electric cars.

Honda’s exhibits

As mentioned, the Japanese automaker is set to show off multiple products and technologies at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. 

Fortunately, Honda revealed the following models it will launch at the upcoming auto show next month:

  • SUSTAINA-C Concept and Pocket Concept (World premiere): Electric automobile and motorcycle concept models made of recycled and reused acrylic resin
  • SC e: Concept (World premiere): Electric motorcycle concept model with swappable batteries
  • Honda Specialty Sports Concept (World Premiere): Electric sports car concept model 
  • HondaJet/Honda eVTOL*1: Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft 
  • Electric products that utilize Honda Mobile Power Pack e: Renewable energy storage 
  • Honda CI-MEV (World Premiere): Two-seat, four-wheel EV concept model with Cooperative Intelligence (CI) and automated driving technologies
  • Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle (Japan Premiere): Platform-style autonomous vehicle concept model for large loads needs
  • Honda Avatar Robot: An avatar robot with a multi-fingered robotic hand demonstrating Honda’s ASIMO and the AI-based remote control tech
  • UNI-ONE: Hands-free seated personal mobility device

These are only a few of the products the company will present in its “Honda DREAM LOOP” booth. According to the company, the booth will aid them in showcasing the future of mobility products and services aligning with their visions.

Honda to launch 30 EVs by 2030

Honda previously announced plans to develop and introduce a total of 30 new electric vehicle offerings worldwide by 2030.

Electrek indicated that the mix will include specialty and flagship e-sports cars. It also noted some rumors suggesting that one of these models will be an NSX while the other will be a GT.

In addition, The Street reported that Honda will debut the new Prologue all-electric SUV production model in early 2024. Acura has also partnered with GM to launch the Acura ZDX with the latter’s Ultium platform.

For those interested customers and EV enthusiasts, Honda’s first e-sports car will debut globally at the Japan Mobility Show from October 28 to November 5, 2023. Meanwhile, media days will kick off on October 25 to 26.
