Japanese legacy automaker Honda is trying to create some stir in the electric vehicle space by teasing a radical model concept it plans to debut at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The move is apparently part of Honda’s preparation for its planned debut of an “all-new global Honda electric vehicle (EV) series.”
Honda previews new electric car concept
Honda teased a new electric vehicle concept with a wedge-shaped silhouette. There are currently not many details about the yet-to-be-named concept.
Nonetheless, the teaser photo revealed that the mystery car features a glass windshield that perfectly blends into the front structure.
As you can see from the photo, the concept model has a bonnet and a front windshield drawn in a single straight line. It seems to have flush lighting, but there is no obvious signature fascia design. It also features a front wheel with a geometric blade design and a low-profile rubber tire.
CarExpert noted that Honda initially introduced the sharp-edged design on the e:N GT, e:N Coupe, and e:N SUV concepts it debuted in China in 2021. Since then, it officially advanced into e:NP2 and e:NS2 crossovers. Both models will be exclusive to the local market and will undergo production by 2024.
Potential e:Architecture integration
Interestingly, Honday may use the e:Architecture it originally introduced in 2021. The automaker then announced that the EVs using this electric-only platform would initially debut in the US before hitting the global market.
It is also worth noting that EVs planned for the e-Architecture are supposed to launch production by 2026.
That said, the e-Architecture will play a significant role in Honda’s efforts to completely shift away from traditional internal combustion engine-powered vehicles by 2040.
Electrification progress
Honda was initially reluctant to fully electrify its lineup like its co-Japanese brand Toyota. It strongly stood by its hybrid drivetrains with its continuous efforts on hydrogen fuel cell technology development.
Now, the company seems to become more open to battery-electric vehicle technology with the imminent launch of new models in the coming years. As MotorTrend noted, the automaker aims to launch 30 new EVs by 2030.
Its lineup currently includes several EVs, such as two HR-V-based models, the soon-to-retire E hatch, Honda Prologue, and Acura ZDX.
Excitingly, Honda Chief Toshihiro Mibe will pull the covers of the new concept and other planned EVs on at the CES on January 9. This promotional strategy and the imminent arrival of the new Honda EVs will aid the company in achieving its target of 2 million electric car sales by the end of the decade.
