Gotion charges up with new battery tech

According to the press release, Gotion High-tech took the opportunity to reveal its new 5C ultra-fast-charging G-Current battery, high-nickel NCM cylindrical Stellary battery, and all-solid-state battery technology during the recent tech conference at its headquarters in Hefei.

🔋 Gotion introduces the Jinshi line of Solid State batteries boasting 350Wh/kg energy density and passing a high-temperature test of 200°C.

Gotion’s G-Current battery with ultra-fast charging

Gotion claims that its new “G-Current” battery supports 5C ultra-fast charging. For context, “C” refers to the battery’s charge multiplier, while “5C” means the pack can theoretically hit 100% charge in just one-fifth of an hour.

VW backed Gotion (also Tata's supplier) has some new battery tech.

The G-Current reportedly reaches 80% from 0% in just 9.8 minutes. It slightly increases to 15 minutes for a 90% state-of-charge and 25 minutes for a full charge.

It can power a wide range of clean energy vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). It also supports chemistries like lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and ternary.

Using LFP cells enables the G-Current battery to have a capacity of over 75 kWh and a range of 600 kilometers+. Meanwhile, ternary allows the battery to have over 100 kWh capacity and 800 kilometers driving range.

It has already entered mass production and boasts one of the best charging performances among new battery technologies unveiled in the past year.

New Stellary Battery

Gotion also unveiled its high nickel ternary chemistry-based Stellary Battery aimed at the large cylindrical battery market.

It has a 46-millimeter diameter and supports 4C fast charging. It will undergo production at the company’s seventh-gen factory.

The battery cell boasts a 285 Wh/kg (775 Wh/L) energy density and can cycle 2,500 times at room temperature to sustain 70% health. It can also charge from 10% to 70% in just 9 minutes, with the next-gen factory reducing costs further.

According to the report, the seventh-gen factory’s automated battery production reduced labor costs per GWh by 37.5%. Meanwhile, its vertical integration and material recycling allow for a 50% reduction in manufacturing costs.

VWが支援するGotionが最大5Cの超急速充電に対応したG-Currentと大型円筒形電池のStellary Batteryを発売、さらに27年生産開始予定の全固体電池のGemstoneを発表。

Solid-state battery Gemstone

The VW-backed battery maker also introduced an all-solid-state battery, marking its formal foray into this new battery chemistry.

It boasts an energy density of 350 Wh/kg (800 Wh/L), surpassing mainstream lithium ternary batteries by 40%. It also has over 3,000 life cycles, enabling an electric car to reach a range of 1 million kilometers over its full life span.

It also has a 280 Wh/kg energy density and a maximum driving range of 1,000 km between charges.

Gotion’s solid-state battery program chief engineer, Pan Ruijun, asserts that the company expects small-scale production and vehicle-loading trials in 2027. Meanwhile, based on the company’s conservative estimate, mass production may kick off in 2030.
