Chinese battery maker Gotion High-Tech proudly announced Friday in a press release that it successfully rolled off the first battery pack at its new Fremont factory in the United States on December 21.
Milestone
The production of Gotion’s first battery pack in the new Fremont factory marks a significant milestone as it is the company’s inaugural product manufactured in the US.
The first battery pack from Fremont signifies major progress of the Chinese battery giant’s “Made in USA” initiative, which it launched in 2014 with the establishment of its first R&D facility near Silicon Valley.
Deputy Governor of Anhui Province Sun Yong, Fremont Mayor Lily Mei, San Francisco-based Chinese Consulate General’s Commercial Counselor Wu Peimin, and Senior Vice President/Gotion Americas Business President Li Chen attended the event to commemorate the groundbreaking milestone.
“For the past decade, we have consistently adhered to a three-in-one strategy featuring localized research & development, localized manufacturing, and localized marketing. From the initial development of battery management systems to the present battery factory, we have encountered numerous challenges and tests. Today, we have made a name for ourselves in the Americas market, and with the help of the Illinois battery factory and Michigan material factory, Gotion will work together with customers to build a localized and diversified supply chain system characterized by a full value chain.”
Li Chen, Gotion SVP & Gotion Americas Business President
About the factory
Gotion erected its new Fremont factory in Silicon Valley with a set production capacity target of 1 GWh. As mentioned, the factory marks the company’s first-ever battery manufacturing line in a North American country.
Impressively, the factory boasts an astounding automation rate of 85%. It focuses on energy storage system (ESS) products such as portable energy storage and residential energy storage solutions with a capacity range of 3 kWh-30 kWh under the GenDome brand.
Gotion is committed to continuously improving critical areas in the factory to ensure safe, reliable, and integrated ESS products for customers, such as follows:
- technological and product innovation
- customer development
- service upgrades
- production capacity arrangements
Expansion efforts
Gotion High-Tech is a Chinese company that focuses on battery research and development (R&D) and energy solutions.
The company stays committed to its expansion goals amid the worldwide push for more sustainable energy. In fact, it is currently working to pursue its expansion to the Vietnamese market through a joint venture with VinFast’s energy unit, VinES.
It also reported a memorable achievement last year when its first Europe-made battery pack rolled off the production line in the university town of Göttingen in Germany, according to Electrek. In addition, it acquired a 25% share in Slovakian battery startup InoBat just this year to aid its European expansion push.
Moreover, the South China Morning Post also indicated Gotion’s ongoing development for a new $2.36 battery material factory in Michigan with an annual production output of 150,000 tons of cathode materials.
“Localising production in the US and other Western markets is a primary choice for China’s EV battery producers since geopolitical tensions and protectionist measures make it difficult for them to ship Chinese-made battery products abroad.”
Davis Zhang, Suzhou Hazardtex Senior Executive
Gotion further intensified its US expansion push with the launch of its Fremont factory, with plans to establish a new $2 billion electric vehicle battery factory in Illinois. Gotion’s newest Fremont factory has the potential to hit a 1 GWh production capacity owing to its 85% automation rate.
