General Motors-backed Wuling has just launched a new affordable electric car model, the 2024 Bingo EV, in the Chinese market on Friday. With a $8,000 price tag, the new market entrant undercuts BYD’s Seagull EV.
Wuling launches ultra-affordable Bingo EV
GM’s joint venture with SAIC, Wuling, officially introduced the new 2024 Bingo EV with a price of only sub-$8,000 (56,800 yuan), an apparent move to compete with Chinese NEV giant BYD.
Upgrades
The 2024 Wuling Bingo EV retained the size of the 2023 MY version:
- Length – 3,950 mm
- Width – 1,708 mm
- Height – 1,580 mm
However, it features a wide range of upgrades to further attract Chinese customers. It offers four variants, including the Light, Enjoyment, Lingxi Connected, and Lingxi Premium.
All trims now support faster charging from 30%-80% in just 35 minutes via DC fast charging. For comparison, the 203-km standard range trim of the 2023-gen model did not offer it.
While the 2024 MY Bingo EV kept the 10.25″ dual-screen system and 1,240 liters storage room (with the seats down), the Lingxi trims now feature Ling OS Lingxi car system with entertainment apps. It also now offers customers a Snow Mountain White paint option for the 203-km Light version.
Meanwhile, the Enjoyment, Lingxi connected, and Lingxi premium trims also gained a new Skyclave Green interior color option. They also come with a three-in-one water-cooled flat wire motor, further improving cooling efficiency.
Wuling to challenge BYD’s dominance
In March 2024, BYD disrupted the Chinese electric vehicle industry with the arrival of its low-cost Seagull EV. It launched with a base price of only $9,700 (69,800 yuan).
BYD expects this new EV model to lead its “new era of electricity is cheaper than oil.” It enjoyed an early success with almost 35,000 unit sales in May alone, enabling it to claim the top spot in the monthly model ranking ahead of the Bingo EV.
In an effort to catch up, Wuling introduced the 2024 Bingo EV with significant upgrades and lower pricing. In fact, it undercuts the price of the BYD Seagull by about $1,700 in the Chinese market.
Presented below is the range and pricing comparison between the 2024 Wuling Bingo EV and the BYD Seagull:
Bingo EV Light | Bingo EV Enjoyment | Bingo EV Lingxi connected | Bingo EV Lingxi premium | BYD Seagull Active | BYD Seagull Free | BYD Seagull Flying | |
Starting Price | $7,900 (56,800 yuan) | $9,800 (70,800 yuan) | $10,300 (74,800 yuan) | $11,700 (84,800 yuan) | $9,700 (69,800 yuan) | $10,500 (75,800 yuan) | $12,000 (85,800 yuan) |
Range (CLTC) | 126 mi (203 km) | 207 mi (333 km) | 207 mi (333 km) | 255 mi (410 km) | 190 mi (305 km) | 190 mi (305 km) | 252 mi (405 km) |
Overall, Wuling has simplified and upgraded the range for a higher-spec EV worthy of customers’ money. That said, it would be interesting to see how the new 2024 Wuling Bingo EV can beat the BYD Seagull in sales in the following months. The new Seagull rival is available in the Chinese market and some foreign countries, including Indonesia.
For context, Wuling is a joint venture formed by SAIC (50.1% share), GM (44%), and Wuling (5.9).
