In September, sales of passenger plug-in electric cars worldwide surpassed 1 million registrations for the first time, as per InsideEVs.

There were approximately 1,040,289 new passenger plug-in electric car registrations in September based on EV-Volumes data Jose Pontes published. That represents up to 17% of the overall car market and is 51% more than last year.

All-electric vehicles saw a 13% increase in the global market share. That said, plug-in hybrids accounted for around 4% of the market share. Due to PHEV’s rapid economic growth in China, it saw a slightly higher growth rate than BEVs. On the other hand, PHEV sales outside of China have decreased for seven consecutive months.

Plug-in car registrations, as per the report:

  • BEVs: about *795,000 (up 50% year-over-year) and 13% share
  • PHEVs: about *245,000 (up 54% year-over-year) and 4% share
  • Total: 1,040,289 (up 51% year-over-year) and 17% share

* estimated from the market share

Remarkably, over 6.8 million new plug-in passenger cars have been registered globally this year to date. It paves the way for more than a record 10 million units in 2022. In retrospect, there were only 6.5 million plug-in electric registrations last year.

Plug-in car registrations year-to-date:

  • BEVs: about *4.9 million and 9.3% share
  • PHEVs: about *1.9 million and 3.7% share
  • Total: 6,815,282 and roughly 13% share

* estimated from the market share

Top 10 for the month:

  1. Tesla Model Y – 113,307
  2. Tesla Model 3 – 68,710
  3. BYD Song Plus (BEV + PHEV) – 45,966

The Tesla Model Y broke some pretty daring sales records with more than 113,000 car registrations worldwide in September. It is worth noting that Tesla’s record is the first-ever six-digit result for a pure electric car. Additionally, the Model Y rose to the top of the global sales rankings.

Tesla Model 3 is in the second spot with 68,710 car registrations, followed by the BYD Song (BEVs and PHEVs counted together) with only 45,966 registrations. Nonetheless, the Chinese automaker succeeded in establishing six of its models in the top 10.

Top 20 by the end of September:

Only five models from non-Chinese brands are included in the top 20, dominated by Chinese manufacturers.
