Plug-in car registrations across the world witnessed an astounding 25% year-on-year increase in April 2024, according to EV-Volumes. This remarkable sales growth indicates that the industry remains progressive despite major challenges in electrification.
Plug-in car sales – April 2024 and YTD
According to the latest registration data, the passenger plug-in electric car market sold a total of 1,221,181 new units worldwide in April 2024.
This remarkable sales result enabled the segment to account for approximately 18% of the total market, a notable increase from just 16% in the same period last year.

Plug-in hybrids continue to surpass the growth of battery-electric vehicles primarily due to the Chinese market.

In hindsight, passenger plug-in electric car registrations almost reached 13.7 million units globally in 2023. They accounted for 16% of the total vehicle volume, a notable increase from just 14% in 2022.
Tesla Model Y leads the ranking
As expected, Tesla’s popular Model Y electric crossover dominated the top 10 best-selling plug-in electric cars in April 2024. However, Chinese rival BYD swamped the ranking with 6 model entries. Refer to the table below:

Top-selling brands and groups
Chinese NEV giant BYD beat Tesla by a wide margin in the top-selling brand rankings in April 2024. However, this result is not surprising, considering that Tesla only sells limited models of electric vehicles. In contrast, BYD offers a wide range of BEV and PHEV lineup.
