Tesla reportedly halted production of the world’s most sought-after electric vehicle Tesla Model 3, at the Gigafactory Shanghai in China, according to the latest update from renowned Tesla China watcher Wu Wa.
Wu Wa, who has been documenting Giga Shanghai’s development from the facility’s inception, recently noted that it looks like Model 3 production has been put on hold. Giga Shanghai was still active, but most of the activity was concentrated in the Model Y section, according to the drone operator’s footage. It was oddly quiet in the Model 3 section.
That said, it seems that the electric vehicle giant is currently gearing up the Giga Shanghai for the production of the highly awaited “Project Highland” Model 3.
In early May, Tesla China immediately refuted rumors that the production of the new Model 3 would begin in June. However, it is worth noting that Tesla China is known to deny rumors that have ultimately proven to be real, such as the import of the Giga Shanghai-made EVs to the US.
Project Highland
Project Highland is not simply a facelift for the Model 3, as it is anticipated to get a new powertrain and significant visual and interior upgrades. The Model 3’s exterior has mostly remained unchanged since it first appeared as a prototype in 2016, so any exterior upgrades would certainly matter a lot. Consumers would probably also be delighted with the anticipated interior changes to the Model 3.
All that said, it is possible that Giga Shanghai would have to completely stop producing the Model 3 in order to gear up for the redesign.
It remains to be seen whether or not this relates to Project Highland. However, it must be noted that Tesla China is determined not to hold back in the nation, especially given the competitive nature of China’s auto industry.
