The German Government, through the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), has officially completed the initial tender for the development of approximately 900 DC fast charging stations in the country.
The ministry released the list of companies to receive the contracts on September 27.
“Individual mobility is a valuable asset in a free society. That’s why I’m pleased that we as the Federal Ministry of Transport are setting a milestone with the German network, which will ensure that users have a reliably available range of fast-charging options in Germany. With the German network, we complement the expansion activities of the charging infrastructure operators in a meaningful and targeted manner. Simple fast charging without gaps on the charging map becomes a reality.”
Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing
About the project
Initial tender
BMDV expects the project to establish about 8,000 individual electric vehicle charging stalls. Each charging site will feature 4 to 6 stalls, InsideEVs noted.
It must also be noted that this charging infrastructure development project will be the first tender under the “Deutschlandnetz” (Germany network).
It primarily aims to solidify the country’s EV charging network to support the growing number of electrified vehicles on the roads.
Second tender
As per the report, the second tender will see another 200 DC fast-charging stations deployed across unsupervised motorway rest sites at the unmanaged motorway rest facilities.
Overall, the first and second tender aims to facilitate the development of a total of 1,000 new fast-charging stations nationwide. Each site will offer 4-8 DC fast-chargers.
“In order to build a comprehensive, needs-based fast charging network everywhere in Germany at the necessary speed, the market-driven activities of charging infrastructure operators alone are not enough. With the German network, we ensure that charging infrastructure is also set up where charging stations would otherwise be built too late due to a lack of economic viability.”
Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff, NOW GmbH CEO
Beneficiaries
The companies lucky enough to land the first tender are mostly German-based, as indicated in BMDV’s press release. Refer to the list below:
- Allego GmbH
- BayWa Mobility Solutions GmbH
- E.ON Drive Infrastructure GmbH
- Eviny Elektrifisering AS
- Fastned Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG
- EWE Go HOCHTIEF Ladepartner GmbH & Co. KG
- Mer Germany GmbH
- Pfalzwerke AG
- Total Energies Marketing Deutschland GmbH
- Via Deutschlandnetz (VINCI Concessions Deutschland GmbH)
Notably, TotalEnergies recently indicated plans in its official press release to deploy 134 stations under its EV hubs project. It will cover the eastern, Central, and Western parts of Germany. The project will offer approximately 1,100 HPC ( high-power charge) stalls.
In addition, Fastned aims to develop a total of 92 charging stations with the aid of the first tender. It will equip each site with up to 16 charging stalls. The project will significantly expand the company’s current portfolio of just 37 charging stations in the country. Meanwhile, Allego will only deploy 48 DC fast-charging stations.

Germany’s major initiatives to support the shift to clean energy vehicles are among the main drivers of the industry’s progressive growth. The tenders will significantly aid the country in offering an enormous and reliable DC fast-charging infrastructure. The involvement of varying charging networks will initiate healthy competition in the EV charging industry.
