South Korean luxury car brand Genesis tapped American electric automaker Lucid Motors for electric motors supply to power its upcoming X Convertible model, according to Sisa Journal.
Genesis X Convertible to get high-performance Lucid electric motors
Apart from making electric vehicles, Lucid is also producing and selling electric motors to other companies.
In fact, it is currently the official supplier of front electric motors to Formula E teams. Most recently, British luxury sports car maker Aston Martin forged a deal with Lucid to secure the supply of electric motors for its upcoming electric vehicles.
Now, Hyundai Motors’ Genesis brand is also set to source the necessary electric motors for its upcoming flagship electric convertible from Lucid.
According to the report, the two companies have reached the final negotiation phase to purchase Lucid’s electric motors. The unnamed source asserted that the launch timing hindered Genesis from employing its in-house developed motors, prompting it to ask for Lucid’s help.
The Genesis X Convertible Concept
Genesis unveiled the X Convertible Concept at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show as the third and final concept in a series of upscale electric GTs the luxury brand visualized.
These concepts will carry Genesis’ design language in the electric era as it plans to become an all-electric vehicle brand in 2025. Excitingly, a luxury electric coupe based on the Genesis X will soon hit the production line.
The Genesis X Convertible would be a “true halo flagship” for the brand, donning a new version of the iconic crest grille. As per a Genesis spokesperson, the new grille is a blueprint for the front-end designs of the brand’s future EVs.
According to the report, the Genesis X Convertible Concept will finally become a series production model in 2026.
Hints
Details about Genesis’ upcoming electric sportscar remain vague. However, Lucid’s specifications may hint at several details about the upcoming model based on the X Convertible Concept.
Toward late 2023, Lucid unveiled its new Gravity electric SUV. It rides on a 900-volt architecture, delivering a range of up to 440 miles. It can also accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds,
Meanwhile, the Lucid Air electric sedan has several available variants. The Pure AWD offers 353 kW output, while the Touring yields up to 456 kW.
Genesis and Lucid have yet to confirm their alleged partnership for electric motor supply. However, the set production date of 2026 could be too early for Hyundai to produce its own motors at volume. Therefore, it would not be surprising if they chose the easier path of sourcing ready-made electric motors from Lucid.
