South Korean luxury brand Genesis Motor is gearing up to launch an exclusive electric vehicle platform as it seeks to challenge Tesla’s dominance in the United States.

Genesis to launch EV-only architecture

Hyundai-owned Genesis will introduce its own electric vehicle-only architecture “soon,” Edmunds reports, citing Genesis executives’ remarks at a roundtable at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.

Genesis Global Head Mike Song and Global Product Office Head John Son reportedly disclosed that the luxury brand is planning to ditch Hyundai’s fully scalable E-GMP platform.

According to the report, the upcoming Genesis GV60 refresh will be the last model to use the E-GMP platform.

What’s currently known about Genesis’ EV-only platform?

Genesis’ new electric vehicle-only platform will likely be brand exclusive, distinct from Hyundai models.

For context, Genesis’ lineup consists of the GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80. However, only the GV60 model rides on the E-GMP platform. The Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80 share platforms with their gas-powered counterparts.

Following the Genesis GV60 refresh, all new Genesis EVs will ride on the new EV-dedicated platform.

Unfortunately, Genesis has yet to reveal more specific information about this major development.

As for the upcoming Genesis GV60 refresh, it will receive modified looks to further align it with the design themes seen across other Genesis EVs. It will also feature a larger battery pack to deliver a more extended driving range.

US footprint

Through H1 2024, Genesis’ electric vehicle sales increased by almost 27% in the US market compared to the same period last year.

This remarkable YoY sales growth apparently comes as luxury players like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Tesla lost ground in Q2 2024.

Despite the significant progress, Genesis seeks to maintain this upward trend with the launch of the GV60 refresh in 2025.

Genesis is also gearing up to launch a Magma version as the top trim for each of its models, including the electric G80.

These initiatives demonstrate Genesis’ dedication to match or even beat Tesla in the luxury EV segment. It remains a strong industry player to watch amid the US’ shift to electric vehicles.

Considering Hyundai’s relatively rapid moves regarding new model launches, we will likely learn more about the new Genesis EV-only platform soon.
