During General Motors’ Tech Day event, the American automaker has reportedly unveiled plans to introduce over 15 electric vehicles based on the Ultium platform in China by 2025, according to CnEVPost. GM claims that it will have 1 million electric vehicle production per year in the country by that time.
Apart from that, GM has also presented the Chevrolet FNR-XE all-electric concept and the Buick Electra-X electric concept SUV at the event. Apart from these, it has also announced that the platform-equipped GM plant in Wuhan, China, will start producing cars by the end of this year.
SAIC-GM joint venture
In retrospect, the Ultium platform was launched by GM in the largest auto market in September last year. CEO Mary Barra asserted that the said platform is an essential milestone enabling the company to progress toward a future where all vehicles are electric.
Furthermore, the Ultium platform was initially presented with the concept of the company’s future electrification and smart networked plan in April 2021 by its joint venture in China, SAIC-GM.
The company announced that the abovementioned joint venture would have two Ultium plants by the end of the year in Shanghai and Wuhan. Interestingly, the anticipated plants are expected to substantially increase production capacity for all-electric vehicles based on the Ultium platform.
According to SAIC-GM General Manager Wang Yongqing, the first model for the Buick brand based on the Ultium platform will debut within the year. Meanwhile, the first model for the Chevrolet brand based on the platform will also be introduced early the following year.
Wang added that in addition to the initial 50 billion yuan investment, SAIC-GM would spend an additional 20 billion yuan ($2.8 billion) on smart electric vehicles and software.
