France’s new car registrations reported a steady growth of 158,006 units, following the pace from the same period a year ago. However, the entire year’s overall volume had an 8% YoY decline to 1.53 million units, as per InsideEVs.
Notably, that figure is the country’s poorest performance in 47 years since 1975, with 1.48 million registrations.
The PEV market grows slowly
L’Avere-France’s data revealed that the country’s new plug-in vehicle registrations saw a YoY growth of 6% to 42,461 units in December. A significant portion is represented by 39,488 passenger plug-in vehicles with a 2% growth.
As per the report, passenger plug-in vehicles hold 25% of the market, representing a growth from just 24.5% in 2021.
Meanwhile, plug-in sales decreased in December, indicating that all-electric vehicle sales are the only category improving.

Plug-in car sales in France – December 2022
France recorded over 346,000 new plug-in electric vehicle registrations in 2022, indicating a 10% increase from 2021’s 315,000 units. However, the report highlights that the result is
considerably less than in prior years.

Notably, France’s BEV incentives reduction from €6,000 to €5,000 ($5,422) last January 1 may significantly affect this year’s result.
Top models
The Dacia Spring was the electric vehicle with the highest registrations in December, with 2,800 units. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model 3 landed at the second spot with 2,675. The Renault Megane E-Tech with 2,534 and the Tesla Model Y with 2,493 units trail them.
Meanwhile, the entire year’s results feature the best-selling Peugeot e-208 with 19,220 units. The Dacia Spring comes in second place with 18,326.
Remarkably, the Tesla Model 3 outsold the Renault Megane E-Tech to move to third place with 16,754 units.
Furthermore, the Tesla Model Y noted sales of 11,892 units which positions the automaker on solid ground against Frances’s Renault Zoe.

France must take the necessary steps to increase EV adoption, including subsidies, tax credits, and other measures. The government must provide more incentives to urge its people to make the transition this year, thereby boosting its net-zero emission targets.
