France reported remarkable new passenger car registrations of 182,713 units in March, up 24% year-on-year. That figure boosted France’s overall Q1 2023 results to 420,890 units, representing a YoY increase of 15.2%.
Likewise, the country’s plug-in car segment has also reported high results and record-breaking sales.
Plug-in car sales in France – March 2023
L’Avere-France revealed that France registered about 48,707 new plug-in vehicles in March, representing a YoY growth of 48%.
Of that total, passenger plug-in cars accounted for 46,357 units, up 47% YoY. It also enjoyed a YoY market share increase to 25.4% from just 21.4% in 2022.
It is worth noting that both plug-in car registrations and market share had record-breaking results, primarily due to France’s all-electric new sales in March. Nonetheless, plug-in hybrids also showed a solid performance.

France registered over 107,000 new plug-in EVs this year to date, representing a YoY growth of 41%. Of that total, 101,000 were passenger plug-in cars (up 39% YoY) with a market share of 24.1%.

In retrospect, new plug-in car registrations in France hit over 346,000 units, up from just 315,000 units a year ago.
Best-selling models in March
Tesla Model Y continues to dominate and influence France’s plug-in car market with sales of 6,455 units, up from the 2,891 records from November 2022.
The top five were completed by Dacia Spring (3,481), Peugeot e-208 (3,256), Fiat 500 electric (2,021), and Tesla Model 3 (2,008).
As indicated, Model Y’s sibling, Model 3, landed 5th with a YoY sales decline of 48%.
