American legacy automaker Ford is gearing up to launch an electric version of the top-selling model in the UK market in 2023, the Puma, by the end of the year. The new electric vehicle will join Ford’s growing portfolio in Europe.
Ford Puma Gen-E to debut this year
According to Auto Express, Ford will finally introduce the electrified version of the Ford Puma named “Gen-E” by the end of 2024.
The new Ford Puma Gen-E is expected to sell in the sub-$40,000 segment, offering distinct features to help it stand apart from other rivals.
This upcoming Ford EV will join Ford’s current EU portfolio, which consists of the Mustang Mach-E, Explorer Electric, and the new Capri EV.
Ford’s decision to electrify the Puma is no longer surprising, considering the model was the most popular car in the UK market last year.
Design and features
The new Ford Puma Gen-E will reportedly maintain some of the latest features of the new Puma subcompact crossover SUV. However, it will have distinct styling.
For reference, the new Puma Ford launched earlier this year offers a tech-loaded interior design. Its new wrap-around sports car-style cockpit comes with two screens: a 12.8″ digital display and a 12″ infotainment. It also features the SYNC 4 connectivity and infotainment system, boosting the computing power twofold compared to the prior iteration. The system offers voice recognition and AppleCar Play/Android Auto integration.
According to the report, the upcoming Ford Puma Gen-E will receive new badging and headlights. It will also sport a closed grille and redesigned front bumper, further improving its efficiency and driving range.
Expected technical features
The new Ford Puma Gen-E deviates from the Explorer and Capri EVs in terms of its architecture. The report noted that it would retain the gas-powered original platform instead of using Volkswagen’s MEB architecture.
While Ford has yet to reveal the new model’s powertrain details, industry followers expect it to have the same options as the E-Transit Courier. For reference, the Ford E-Transit Courier offers a single electric motor that yields an output of 134 horsepower (100 kW) and 214 lb-ft (290 Nm) of torque, according to CarScoops.
It may also support the same 100 kW DC fast charging speed as the E-Transit Courier. While this rate may be low, Ford claims it still enables the van to add an extra 54 miles (87 km) of driving range in just 10 minutes.
Ford plans to officially initiate the debut of the new Puma Gen-E later this year. Before that, the American legacy brand will first unveil the new electric Capri on July 10, 2024.
These new model launches are part of Ford’s strategy to revamp its footprint in the European market as it loses ground overseas.
