Ford, Xcel Energy partner for EV charging port installation

American legacy automaker Ford, through its commercial unit Ford Pro, partnered with Xcel Energy to install 30,000 electric vehicle charging ports for business fleets by the end of the decade.

The partnership is a significant advancement in the country’s electric vehicle industry, potentially aiding to address the prevailing barrier: lack of charging infrastructure.

Partnership details

According to the press release, Ford and Xcel Energy will install the planned charging ports in the latter’s service territories throughout the United States by 2030 under the 30×30 program.

Xcel will shoulder the majority of the upfront costs for eligible business fleet customers. Meanwhile, the American automaker will leverage its innovative end-to-end charging solutions to guarantee exceptional customer experience from the program.

The development program will officially launch as early as next year through Xcel Energy’s EVSI program in Colorado and Wisconsin. It will continuously explore expansion prospects in other US states in the subsequent six years, pending regulatory approvals. These states include Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas.

30×30 initiative

The 30×30 will demonstrate the strategic partnership between an automaker and utility provider as they seek to aid business fleets in transitioning to electric vehicles. 

The program will simplify the acquisition process of electric vehicle charging and support for business fleets.  

However, it must be noted that eligible customers must first enroll in an approved Xcel Energy EVSI program in their service location. 

Xcel will install the charging infrastructure, which will feature cutting-edge Ford Pro Charging equipment. Ford Pro will also manage the post-installation customer service and support.

What else to expect?

The two major players also aim to examine telematics data from participating EVs to encourage off-peak charging activity. 

It can potentially lessen the pressure on the electric grid and aid drivers in saving money compared to charging during high-demand times.

Ford and Xcel Energy’s partnership can substantially alleviate drivers’ concerns over the lack of charging infrastructures and limited battery range. The 30×30 initiative will be operated by Ford Pro, with the first installations starting in Q1 2024.
