SALT Energy, a solar contractor, recently completed the installation of a rooftop solar system in Florida that is now the most extensive rooftop solar system in the state of Florida as well as the state’s biggest privately owned solar project.
The 3.24 megawatt (MW) solar project is placed on the roof of Badia Spices’ factory in Sweetwater, Florida, which is located in Miami-Dade County.
The factory is 300,000 square feet in size. The project is currently the most extensive solar installation that is privately owned in the state of Florida.
The SALT energy
Miami-based The Washington, District of Columbia-based company Salt Service has a subsidiary called SALT Energy that specializes in the installation of hurricane-tested solar arrays “in corrosive and high-wind conditions” in the states of Florida and the Caribbean.
During the course of this project, the business with headquarters in Miami made use of flat roof racks produced by PanelClaw and solar panels produced by SunPower, which has its headquarters in San Jose, California:
SALT Energy’s Vice President of Engineering and Operations, David Kaul, made the following statement:
“The requirement by our customer to avoid roof membrane penetrations for anchoring the array to preserve the warranty, coupled with the hurricane wind load design requirements in Miami-Dade County, posed the two greatest technical challenges for our Badia Spices project.”
It has a 529 kW capacity
Badia Spices is a Hispanic food company established in 1967 and owned and operated by a family.
The new rooftop solar installation, which is the company’s second, is expected to offset approximately 80% of the factory’s total electricity consumption.
In 2019, SALT Energy installed a rooftop solar array with a capacity of 529 kW at the Doral, Florida, location of Badia Spices’ 100,000-square-foot facility.
