Plugin electric vehicle adoption in Sweden continues to progress as its market share expanded 46% YoY to a whopping 60.1% in August, CleanTechnica reports.
Unsurprisingly, Tesla’s all-electric SUV Model Y dominated the market with 1,506 unit sales in August alone.
Market shares per powertrain
Battery-electric models accounted for 41% of the market. Its sales enjoyed a YoY increase of 68% to 9,748 units.
Meanwhile, plugin hybrids contributed 19.1%. It had a 25% YoY sales growth to 4,557 units. Pure hybrid vehicles only had a 7.9% market share and reported a sales drop of 26% YoY.
Petrol-based models remained the second most popular powertrain with a 22.2% share. However, Diesel vehicles’ market share is now down to 7.6%. It suffered a YoY sales decline of 22% YoY.
In a significant development, the combined market share of internal combustion engine-powered vehicles was down to just a third of the overall automotive market. That considered, some expect it to continuously decline by the end of 2023.
On the other hand, plugin market share for the trailing 3 months had a YoY increase from just 50.9% in the same period last year to 59.7%. The report projects this rate to hit nearly 70% by the end of the year.
Top models in August
As expected, the popular Tesla Model Y reclaimed its leading position in Sweden’s BEV market in August with sales of 1,506 units.
Notably, BYD’s Atto 3 overthrew the Tesla Model Y in July with 721 sales due to logistic challenges, Electrek reported. At that time, Tesla Model Y only sold 345 units, which positioned it at the fifth spot.
Going back to the August 2023 rankings, the VW ID.4 followed Tesla’s all-electric SUV with 1,454 sales. August marks the German automaker’s best month so far, the report noted.
Meanwhile, the previous market leader, BYD Atto 3, dropped to the 10th spot with just 323 sales.

Top models in Aug ’23 Trailing QTR
Unsurprisingly, the Tesla Model Y is once again the leading BEV model in the trailing 3 months, with sales of 4,242 units.
The VW ID.4 followed it again with 3,136 sales. The Skoda Enyaq claimed the third spot with 1,444 unit sales.
China’s BYD Atto 3 ranked fourth with sales of 1,346 units. The fifth placer BMW I4 only sold 1,340 units in August.

The steady growth of electric vehicle sales in Sweden is indeed remarkable, given that the country is currently suffering from recession. This major development in the country’s automotive industry is also unsurprising because of increasing gasoline costs, currently at $1.90 per liter.
