New vehicle registrations in the EU increased by 17.8% to 1 million units in June 2023. This notable improvement suggests that the market is gradually recovering from the weak figures in 2022 due to COVID-induced component shortages.

This year to date, the EU had 5.4 million new vehicle registrations, up 17.9%. However,  ACEA reminded that overall volumes suffered a 21% decline from 2019 levels.

Nonetheless, battery-powered vehicle registrations continue to increase in the EU. It advanced as the third most popular fuel type in the sixth month of the year.

New BEV registrations grew 66.2% in June

The EU enjoyed a significant 66.2% increase in battery electric vehicle registrations to 158,252 units in June. Its market share also reported a year-on-year growth to 15.1% from just 10.7% in 2022. Year-to-date, BEV registrations hit 703,586 units, up 53.8%.

This strong performance enabled BEVs to overthrow diesel-powered vehicles for the first time in history in June. In this sense, BEVs are now the EU’s third most popular fuel type.

As expected,  Tesla’s all-electric Model Y emerged as the top-selling vehicle in the EU in the first half of 2023.

From January to June, the Model Y emerged as the top-selling car in Europe, surpassing all other models regardless of their energy source. Meanwhile, hybrid-electric vehicles are still the second most popular fuel type, with a market share of 24.3%. Its new registrations surged by 32.4% to 254,100 units in June. YTD, it registered 1.4 million units (up 27.9%) and held a 25% market share.

Remarkably, plug-in hybrid vehicles reported a notable rebound in June, with a registration growth of 13.4%. Still, its market share suffered a YoY decline from 8.2% to 7.9%.

Despite the significant advancement of zero-emission vehicles, petrol-powered vehicles remained at the top with a 36.3% market share (down from 38.5% YoY). Its new registrations grew 11% to 379,067 units in June. This year to date, it enjoyed a YoY increase of 15.9% to more than 2 million units.

As for another good news, diesel-powered vehicles suffered a constant decline to 9.4% in June. Its market share also dropped to 13.4%, reflecting a considerable YoY fall from 17.4% in 2022.

EU’s significant BEV registration growth both in June and YTD reflects the increasing interest of European customers in cleaner transportation options.

Tesla Model Y’s consistent dominance is also remarkable, enabling the Musk-led automaker to defend its leading position in the EU industry.

Let’s hope the EU can sustain this upward trend in EV uptake as it strives to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
