Tesla’s estimated order backlog in the global market reportedly stabilized above the 50,000 unit threshold in the past few months. Remarkably, this volume represents a notable decline from approximately 100,000 units in Q1 2023.

Tesla’s global order backlog as of Aug 16

The Musk-led company’s global order backlog was about 54,000 electric vehicles as of August 16, prominent Tesla stats and forecasts source Troy Teslike (@TroyTeslike / X) revealed. According to the data, this volume equates to approximately 18 days of production capacity.

Hi everybody. Based on my calculation, Tesla's order backlog was 54K on 16 Aug, the same as 31 July.

I've just posted a new update on Patreon that shows an updated calculation as of 31 Aug: https://t.co/BnneF2LaDH It will be on Twitter in 2 weeks. pic.twitter.com/clK6jk76Rv

InsideEVs pointed out that this volume is similar to Tesla’s July record. Moreover, the estimations usually varied from 49,000 units to 60,000 units since mid-June.

It must also be noted that the presented numbers are according to “carefully tracked Tesla-related stats (production volume, average wait times for each model/trim).”

Troy Teslike’s chronological data

Presented below are Troy Teslike’s documented data on Tesla’s global order backlog from January 2022 to August 2023:

PeriodsUnitsProduction Capacity (Days)
August 16, 2023:54,00018 days
July 31, 2023:54,000 18 days
July 16, 2023:60,000 18 days

April 30, 2023:68,000 21 days
April 15, 2023:72,000 22 day
March 31, 2023:102,000 28 days
March 16, 2023:103,00029 days
February 28, 2023:106,000 30 days
February 15, 2023:106,000 30 days
January 31, 2023:87,00026 days
January 15, 2023:107,00030 days
December 31, 2022:74,00023 days
December 8, 2022:163,000 40 days
November 30, 2022:190,000 44 days
October: 31, 2022:285,000–
September 30, 2022:299,000–
August 31, 2022:385,000–
March-July, 2022:around 470,000–
January-February, 2022:less than 400,000–

As you can observe in the table, Tesla appears to avoid dropping below 50,000 order backlogs and around two weeks of production capacity. The American automaker’s efforts in maintaining this level are unsurprising, given that it is necessary from the logistical view.

Tesla getting 7k order/day. Backlog not sufficient, need to cut price further.
Expect more price war.
Even LiAuto backlog not sufficient, just over 10k.
All goes well, #BYD can reach 400k/m by June 700k/m by Dec.

Tesla constantly implemented major price cuts and incentives to entice more customers to order its electric cars. As for product improvement, the company has been developing its technologies, such as the FSD and Superchargers, among others. It also recently debuted its new Tesla Model 3 Highland.

Tesla expects its planned factory upgrades to slow down its vehicle production in H2 2023. Meanwhile, the revamped Model 3 version can potentially accumulate a substantial number of orders.

Order backlog per market

The supply-demand balance in certain markets remained “too low” for all key markets like the US, Europe, and China.

The report asserted that US and Canadian customers usually wait for two weeks at the shortest for nearly all Tesla EVs. For reference, the wait time in these two markets was only 11 days, two weeks prior.

On the other hand, customer wait times in Europe are longer at 27 days. Meanwhile, Chinese customers usually wait for their Tesla car orders for 17 days. However, it must be noted that this number was before the arrival of the Model 3 Highland.

Estimated order backlog (change in around 2 weeks):

MarketsUnitsWait Times (Per Day)Changes
United States:14,24614 daysup by 3 days
Canada:72814 daysup by 3 days
Europe:20,03427 daysdown by 4 days
China:14,77717 daysup by 2 days
other:4,07817 daysdown by 15 days
Total:53,86318 daysstable

Here is a detailed table as of 16 Aug. It shows my calculation for the order backlog based on wait times for new orders on Tesla's website multiplied by the daily production rate of each trim level.

The demand for Tesla’s electric cars is expected to increase further with the arrival of the new Model 3 Highland and the imminent launch of the highly awaited Cybertruck. Tesla also plans to produce a mass-market model in India with a base price of $24,000, which it plans to sell globally.
