Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has just said that the electric automaker’s real-world simulation and video generation are the “best in the world,” following OpenAI’s launch of the new Sora generative video model.
OpenAI’s new Sora generative video model
OpenAI recently introduced its innovative text-to-video generative model Sora on its website on Thursday, showcasing the multiple generative AI videos it generated.
For context, Sora enables users to generate videos of up to a minute by just typing in a text prompt. Impressively, it can also adjust the input videos’ designs and surroundings, such as making it drive underwater, among other things.
Tesla boss talks about plans to make a video game
Following Sora’s introduction, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared some of Tesla’s generative videos from 2023 on social media platform X.
The Tesla boss also responded to some X users’ inquiries about OpenAI and the EV giant’s plans for real-world video generation.
For instance, CEO Musk responded to @awoooouwuooooo’s suggestion for Tesla to “make a video game.” She elaborated on the concept, wherein users receive points for “solving engineering problems and you can earn badges.”
The American billionaire asserted that he had wanted to do such a thing for a long time now, emphasizing Tesla’s industry-leading real-world simulation and video generation.
CEO Musk also responded in an X post on Saturday that the automaker has been able to generate real-world video with accurate physics for around a year. However, the video produced by these systems was not entirely interesting as only its cars provided the training data.
Tesla’s previous attempts
Tesla introduced the “Passenger Play” feature to some of its electric vehicle models in 2020. It enabled users to play video games through the in-car infotainment screen even while the car was moving.
However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated a probe to inspect the feature’s functionality and safety just the following year.
In 2023, the US regulator officially concluded the investigation. It noted that the “removal of Passenger Play from the subject vehicles resolved ongoing concerns.” It also warned of potential measures if a safety-related defect exists.
Apart from that, Tesla also launched Steam into its gaming system in 2022. Unlike the “Passenger Play” feature, it only enabled users to play video games when the Tesla car is not moving.
Elon Musk also recently founded its own AI company, xAI. In November, it introduced its inaugural offering, a generative language model named Grok.
