Norway continues to prove worthy of its current title, “electric vehicle eutopia,” with another significant sales growth of almost 35% in April 2024.

For reference, Norway’s overall new passenger car registrations grew 25.2% year-on-year to 11,241 units in April 2024, according to road authority OFV’s latest data.

Electric car sales – April 2024

New electric car registrations in Norway reached a total of 10,051 units in April 2024. This figure indicates a month-on-month increase of 15.4% from just 8,709 in March 2024.

Moreover, the April 2024 sales result also represents a 34.5% YoY increase from just 7,471 registrations in April 2023.

Market share per powertrain

Zero-emission cars accounted for 89.4% of that total. However, it must be noted that nearly all of the 10,051 plug-in electric car registrations are battery-electric models (BEVs), as fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) only contribute a small portion.

🇳🇴 ELECTRIC VEHICLES (EV) SALES CONTINUE TO DOMINATE NORWAY'S NEW CAR MARKET

The data showed a significant uptick in EV sales, reaching a record high of 82.4 percent of the total new car market last year, up from 79.3 percent in 2022, marking a 3.1 percentage point increase.

The market share of zero-emission cars would increase to 91% if plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were included.

Therefore, BEVs’ market share enjoyed a substantial growth from 83.2% in April 2024 and 74.1% in April 2022.

The 1.6% market share of PHEVs demonstrates its continuous sales decline in the Norwegian market. It only sold 178 units in April, down 75% YoY.

Pure hybrids (HEVs) sold 520 units in April 2024, while petrol-based cars sold 136 units with a 1.2% market share.

However, new diesel car registrations increased to 356 units in April 2024 with a 3.2% market share.

Tesla Model Y lost its dominant position

The Tesla Model Y used to be the top-selling model in the Norwegian market in the first quarter.

However, its registrations dropped to 701 units in April. As a result, it landed in the fourth spot behind Volvo EX30, VW ID.4, and VW ID.3.

Presented below are the top-selling plug-in cars in Norway in April 2024:

The remarkable growth in plug-in car registrations in Norway highly demonstrates the country’s strong commitment to an all-electric future amid the global push to cut carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
