Electric car sales grew 65% in 2022 in the United States

The electric car market in the United States reported a year-on-year sales growth of 65% in 2022. Unsurprisingly, American EV giant Tesla remains the market leader, significantly leaving behind its rivals.

BEV sales in the US – Q4 2022

Battery electric vehicle sales reported a YoY growth of 72% in the fourth quarter of 2022. It is worth noting that the Q4 2022 result marks the US’ 7th quarter in a row that records BEV sales growth. Furthermore, the market surged to 235,133, representing a growth of 147% within just two years.

In hindsight, the last time BEV sales reported a quarterly decline was from Q4 2020 (95,203 sales) to Q1 2021 (94,084).

Tesla EV sales – 2022

Tesla reported a YoY sales growth of 32% in Q4 2022 and a YoY increase of 43% in FY 2022. In addition, the EV giant had an 84% growth in just two years since Q4 2020.

However, it must also be noted that the general BEV market in the US is also more rapidly growing than Tesla. It is indeed possible in light of the recent arrival of several appealing, relatively mass-market BEV cars.

It goes without saying that the Musk-led automaker established the BEV market in the US. However, if we look at non-Tesla BEV sales in the past four years, we can see that the general US market grew more than Tesla.

As depicted, the non-Tesla BEV had a strong increase of 155% from 2020 to 2021. It is followed by another significant growth of almost 140% from 2021 to 2022.

It must also be noted that non-Tesla US BEV sales in Q4 2022 were up a staggering 269% from Q4 2021’s 23,053 to 85,133 sales.
