Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has just approved the extension of the Delhi Electric Vehicles (EV) Policy through December 31, 2023, at the cabinet meeting supervised by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
According to the HindustanTimes, the policy will remain effective until either the extension period or until the government introduces the Delhi EV Policy 2.0.
For now, all incentives under the current Delhi Electric Vehicles will remain accessible to customers.
Delhi EV Policy details
The Delhi Government initially introduced the Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy in 2020. It primarily aimed to boost EV shares to 25% by 2025. However, it expired on August 8, 2023.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has just decided on Saturday to extend this policy along with its incentives until December 31 of this year.
“Delhi Cabinet led by CM @arvindkejriwal has given its approval to extend the existing Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy till 31.12.2023 or till notification of Delhi EV policy 2.0 whichever is earlier.
All incentives including subsidy under the existing policy shall continue. Delhi EV policy 2.0 is in final stages and after necessary approvals shall be notified soon.”

Incentives
EV-a2z previously reported Delhi’s EV policy that took effect in 2020. Through this policy, the government provides customers with subsidies per kWh of battery capacity, excluding three-wheeler EVs. Refer to the table below:
Electric Vehicle | Subsidy |
Two-wheelers | ₹5,000 per kWh of battery capacity |
Three-wheelers | ₹30,000 regardless of battery capacity |
Four–wheelers | ₹10,000 per kWh of battery capacity |
Outcomes
According to News18, the Delhi Electric Vehicles (EV) Policy 2020 aided the government in electrifying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered public buses. Electric buses now account for 800 units of the 3,700 buses under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).
In addition, it significantly urged customers to join the shift to EVs with its various subsidies that reduce high-cost models’ prices.
The Delhi Government aims to introduce a new EV policy that will prioritize incentives for traditional car owners seeking to convert to electric powertrains. All these initiatives are part of the government’s efforts to achieve its target of having EVs account for 25% of its overall vehicle registrations by 2025.
