American electric automaker Tesla reportedly sold 75,842 China-made EVs in April, according to the latest data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

It is worth noting that this April 2023 result recorded by Tesla includes both domestic deliveries and exports.

Year to date, Tesla apparently sold 305,164 China-made EVs. Notably, that YTD result represents a 66.13% growth from Q1 2022’s record of 183,686 units.

Sales changes recorded in April

Interestingly, the 75,842 result represents an astounding year-on-year sales growth of 4,916.01%. However, that also indicates a month-on-month decline of 14.66% from March’s record of 88,869 units.

CnEVPost suggests that Tesla’s poor performance in April 2022 is attributable to COVID-19 lockdowns, which affected Giga Shanghai production. For information, the automaker’s Chinese plant manages Model 3 and Model Y production.

Meanwhile, the EV giant’s weak results in April 2023 may be due to customer expectations of price cuts, the report stated.

True enough, Tesla has been implementing price cuts for the Model 3 and Y in some major markets globally. Particularly, its price cuts in early April may have influenced Chinese customers to wait if Tesla would also offer the discount in the country.

However, Tesla VP of external affairs Grace Tao published some charts on Weibo on April 14 to show that all Model 3 and Y variants are more affordable in the Chinese mainland than in any other market.

The Tesla executive appeared to be implying then that Tesla would not be lowering pricing in China. However, there was no context on the post, as pointed out by the report.

With Tesla’s recent price hike in China on May 5, the S3XY lineup now sells at the following base prices:

  • Tesla Model 3: RMB 231,900
  • Tesla Model Y: RMB 263,900
  • Tesla Model S: RMB 808,900
  • Tesla Model X: RMB 898,900

Along with the price hike, the EV giant provided three years of complimentary supercharging credits for the more expensive models S and X, per its Chinese website.
