Last year, Chinese made electric cars became the most popular in Europe
Second of the most popular origin for pure electric vehicles registered in Europe last year was China. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) made up almost 15% of registrations in 2021. China-made EVs are even ahead of other European countries that are boosted in the production of E.V.s, such as France.
175,700 units out of 1.2 million electric passenger cars were made in China. This doesn’t mean that all of the vehicles are all Chinese brands like BYD etc. The majority of these made-in-China cars are from Western brands such as Tesla, Dacia, Polestar, and BMW.
Last 2019, shares of Chinese-made products in Europe are just 0.5%. In 2020, it jumped to 3.5% and 14.7% in 2021, and during the first quarter of 2022, it accounts for 18.66 % of the market share in Europe.

CHINESE PRODUCTION
As from the data above, Germany has the largest market share in Europe’s electric car market. However, It isn’t surprising for Chinese-made E.V.s to be popular since many E.V. automakers have a production plant in China. Not only Western carmakers are present in China, but those residing in Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan also have facilities in China. Their capacities are huge, and they are still able to meet local demands and export to other countries as well.
In particular, Tesla, which just opened its Gigafactory in Berlin, its demands in the European market supplied by its U.S. and China factories. We may see soon the Berlin factory ramp up its production and have its own share as well. In 2021, 52% of Tesla cars that are registered in Europe were all made in China. They were the largest importer of electric cars last year.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Unlike the market for Traditional vehicles, it is said that the Chinese are more positioned than the West when it comes to Electric cars, as the Chinese have a bigger capacity as well as they have more support from their government.
Currently, China has the largest E.V. market in the world. More automakers, such as Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz, are expected to sell Chinese-made EVs soon. In line with this, China might become the largest E.V. exporter globally.
