EV battery installations – Apr 2024

China’s power battery installations reached a whopping 35.4 GWh in April 2024, CnEVPost reports, citing China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) data.

This capacity represents a 40.9% growth compared to the same period last year. It also indicates a 1.4% month-on-month growth from March 2024.

This remarkable power battery deployment growth in China is primarily due to CATL, which claimed almost half of the power battery market last month.

Top 15 EV battery makers in China – Apr 2024

CATL deployed a total power battery capacity of 15.65 GWh in April 2024, enabling it to dominate the ranking with an almost 50% market share. However, this rate indicates a slight 0.22 percentage point decline from March 2024.

BYD landed second with power battery installations of 9.95 GWh in the same period. It gained a 28.37% market share, indicating a 1.58 percentage points increase from the prior month.

CALB followed in the third spot with 2.54 GWh power battery installations and a 7.24% market share. It also enjoyed a slight growth of 0.58 percentage points from March 2024.

Eve Energy (4.11% share) and Gotion High-Tech (3.73% share) completed the top five.

Power battery installations (Ternary vs LFP)

Lithium ternary battery installation capacity hit 9.9 GWh in China in April 2024, up 24.1% YoY. While it also represents a 12.2% MoM decline, it still accounted for 28% of the total.

Meanwhile, the installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries reached 25.5 GWh. It dominated the overall market with a 71.9% share, up 48.7% YoY and 7.8% MoM.

As you can observe in CABIA’s data, CATL remains dominant in the overall electric vehicle battery and ternary battery market in China as of last month. However, BYD managed to beat its co-Chinese rival in the LFP battery market. This is unsurprising as BYD utilizes its LFP batteries in most of its electric vehicle offerings and supplies them to other OEMs in the global market.
