China EV battery deployment surged 89.4% in April, BYD overthrows CATL in the LFP market

Power battery installations in China grew 89.4% year-on-year to 25.1 GWh in April. However, that figure represents a 9.5% decline from the previous month, CnEVPost reports citing China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

In March, technology giant CATL beat electric automaker BYD in China’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery market. However, its dominance did not last long, as the latter reclaimed the top spot the following month.

Power battery installations in China – April 2023

CATL reportedly deployed 10.26 GWh (down 44.95% MoM) of power battery in April, ranking first with a market share of 40.83%. 

BYD ranked second with 7.32 GWh power battery installations and a 29.11% share. It also represents a 2.46% points growth from the previous month.

CALB followed them by a significant margin with 2.20 GWh installations and an 8.74% market share. However, its share indicated a 1.54%-point decline from March’s record of 10.28%.

Eve Energy overthrew Gotion High-tech for the fourth spot with 1.38 GWh installations and a 5.48% share. The latter landed fifth with 1.18 GWh power battery deployment and 4.68% share.

Ternary vs. LFP – April 2023

Ternary Li-ion battery installations in China grew 83.5% YoY to 8.0 GWh, representing 31.8% of the overall installed base in April. According to the report, CATL secured the first spot with a 56.22% share of 4.50 GWh in April. CALB and Sunwoda followed with 17.29% and 6.07% shares, correspondingly.

On the other hand, LFP battery installations increased 92.7% YoY to 17.1 GWh, representing 68.1% of the overall installed base. However, it also suffered a 10% MoM decline. In this segment, BYD overthrew CATL with a 42.68% share of 7.31 GWh power battery installation in April.

CATL landed second with 5.76 GWh LFP battery deployment and 33.65% share. It is worth noting that it dominated the LFP market the prior month with a 39.47% share lead from BYD’s 38.88%. It also marked the first time it beat the EV giant in the LFP market in 2023.

Eve Energy and Gotion High-tech secured the third and fourth spots, with LFP battery deployment shares of 7.01% and 6.17%, respectively.

The rapid growth of electric vehicles is boosting the demand for power batteries globally, especially in China. It would be interesting to see how BYD and CATL would fare in the following months.
