COSCO Shipping, the Chinese state-owned ocean container shipping company, has just launched the “world’s largest” battery-electric ship with more than 50,000 kWh battery capacity in China.

Green Water 01 officially starts service in China

COSCO Shipping’s Green Water 01 all-electric container ship successfully arrived in the Port of Yangshan, according to the company’s WeChat post. The local maritime safety administration berthed the electric container ship there.

The new Green Water 01’s dimensions are as follows:

  • Length: 119.8 meters
  • Molded width: 23.6 meters
  • Molded depth: 9 meters
  • Design draft: 5.5 meters

The Chinese company claims that the new electric container ship delivers numerous firsts for the marine sector, such as its total length, width, container capacity, deadweight tonnage, and battery capacity.

Technical details

The Green Water 01 boasts a top speed of 19.4 km per hour (12 mph).

The world’s largest electric container ship, the Greenwater 01, has begun regular service.

It has an astounding deadweight tonnage of 10,0000 tons and more than 50,000 kWh battery capacity.

COSCO noted that the number of battery modules is still configurable to support longer sea travel.

For instance, integrating additional 20-foot battery boxes with 1,600 kWh energy capacity can boost the initial range for longer voyages.

Ship captain Wang Jun even said that the Green Water 01 can deliver 80,000 kWh of energy with 24 battery boxes. It equates to about 15 tons of fuel for a similar expedition in a conventional container ship.

About the developer

China Ocean Shipping Group (COSCO) is a state-owned multinational conglomerate based in Shanghai. It primarily focuses on marine transportation, leading the largest liner carrier in China.

Meanwhile, COSCO Shipping is only a subsidiary established in 2016 after the merger of COSCO and China Shipping.

The Group transports hundreds of container vessels every day while also providing enormous ships to Chinese carmakers for exports in new markets like Europe.

COSCO Shipping claims that the Green Water 01 can save 3,900 kg (8,600 pounds) of fuel for every 100 nautical miles it travels. It can also reduce CO2 emissions by 12.4 tons.

Green Water 01 has officially started weekly service from Shanghai and Nanjing, and vice versa.
