Chinese electric automaker BYD sold record 240,220 new energy vehicles sales in May, topping the 1 million threshold for the year.
Notably, that result represents a year-over-year sales growth of 108.99% and a month-on-month increase of 14.23%.
Of that total, new energy passenger vehicles accounted for 239,092 units, up 109.39% YoY. Meanwhile, new energy commercial vehicles contributed the remaining 1,128 units, up 48.42% YoY.

Of the 239,092 new energy passenger car sales, battery electric vehicles accounted for 119,603 units. It represents a YoY sales growth of 124.19% and 14.6% MoM.
BYD’s annualized sales rate increased to 1.4 million BEVs in May, surpassing Tesla’s 2022 total sales of 1.3 million. The Driven noted that Tesla targets 2 million-unit EV sales in 2023.
Meanwhile, passenger plug-in hybrid cars reported sales of 119,489 units, indicating a YoY increase of 96.42% and a 13.69% MoM.
As for exports, BYD’s sales in foreign markets reached 10,203 units. However, it was down 31.19% MoM from April’s record of 14,827 units. Nonetheless, the Chinese EV giant is now striving to expand and strengthen its presence in new export markets in Southeast Asia.
BYD recently debuted its all-electric Seagull model in Thailand with a base price of 407,000 baht ($A18,000). With that price, it will surely attract many Thai customers to consider buying the China-made EV.

EV-a2z recently reported that BYD along with its closest rival Tesla scored high in International Council on Clean Transportation’s top 20 light-duty vehicle manufacturers ranking. It closely followed the American EV giant as the global EV market leader in 2022.
