ChargePoint’s Omni Port can charge any EV

According to the press release, ChargePoint’s new Omni Port is a one-size-fits-all electric vehicle connector solution that will make charging easier for owners in the North American region.

The Omni Port basically offers the Level 2 SAE J1772 plug, the Combined Charging System (CCS1) plug, and Tesla’s proprietary North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug in a single unit, allowing any electric vehicle model to charge in any parking space without an additional cable.

“Across hardware and software, ChargePoint is bringing to market innovative solutions that ensure all drivers who need to charge are able to do so.”

Rick Wilmer, ChargePoint CEO

#ChargePoint has presented its new 'Omni Port' charging solution for North America. At its core, it is an adapter integrated into the charging station that allows #NACS vehicles to use CCS charging stations. The correct plug is always available. https://t.co/c6SSmpT1Wn pic.twitter.com/zp8o1CwbQY

How does it work?

ChargePoint outlined that electric vehicle owners must only enter their car’s make and model in the ChargePoint app and then tap to charge. After that simple process, the system will manage the rest.

For those who do not use the app, they can also select the correct connector on the screen.

ChargePoint’s Omni Port automatically installs an adapter to the connector’s tip before initiating the charging process.

Omni Port automatically dispenses a CCS1/J1772 or NACS (Tesla) connector to match the EV in use, see more details here: https://t.co/2ORYwFA3yW

Alleviating EV drivers’ headache

Omni Port cuts the need for owners to bring their own adapters and dedicated parking spaces to one connector type.

ChargePoint claims that the Omni Port has no incremental cost as it is a standard feature of its applicable chargers.

This groundbreaking charging tech makes it easier for EV owners to navigate in a “multiple connector environment,” potentially accelerating the shift to electric mobility in North America.

“With Omni port, ChargePoint solved the challenges associated with a multiple connector environment, ensuring Tesla and non-Tesla drivers can continue to expect a world-class driver experience. We are giving drivers and site hosts assurance that ChargePoint will continue to meet all their charging needs now and in the future.”

ChargePoint aims to start deploying Omni Port across its new charging locations and existing AC and DC stations later this year, including those with 800-volt charging. The company also confirmed that the new tech could also reach existing ChargePoint CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 models at a nominal cost.
