Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) has commenced the serial production of its li-ion battery in Germany, its first-ever plant beyond China, as per PR Newswire.
“The production kickoff proves that we kept our promise to our customers as a reliable partner of the industry and we stay committed to Europe’s e-mobility transition even under very challenging conditions like the pandemic. We are working hard to ramp up production to full capacity, which is our top priority for the coming year.”
Matthias Zentgraf, CATL’s Europe branch President
Progress
The Contemporary Amperex Technology Thuringia GmbH (CATT) plant’s G2 building holds the first batch of li-ion battery cells from the recently built production line under serial conditions.
Meanwhile, the other production lines are still being installed and commissioned.
It is also worth noting that CATL passed all the necessary tests for all global products. It proves that the Chinese battery giant is “capable of starting cell production and supplying cells to its European customers from its local plant.”
In hindsight, the state of Thuringia granted CATT a production authorization for battery cells in April 2022, allowing a starting annual capacity of 8 GWh. In Q3 2021, the factory already began producing modules in its G1 building.
Plans
CATL intends to eventually increase its manufacturing capacity to 14GWh and add up to 2,000 new jobs around Germany with its 1.8 billion Euro total investment.
Undoubtedly, CATL is a world leader in li-ion battery development and production. It has been dedicated to offering top-notch solutions and services in cutting-edge new energy technologies, which aids the global net-zero emission targets.
