CATL, Yutong partnership

CATL and bus maker Yutung Bus Co partnered to launch the new battery packs aimed at powering upcoming electric vehicles, CnEVPost reported.

In hindsight, the two Chinese companies originally formed a 10-year collaboration in 2012. Under the agreement, they committed to co-developing long-lasting commercial vehicle batteries and exploring new technologies and materials.

CATL and Yutong primarily aim to leverage their expertise and resources to expand their businesses in the global market with innovative vehicles and batteries.

Yutong’s buses, already available in more than 40 countries, use CATL power batteries. These countries include Italy, France, the UK, Spain, and Qatar, among others.

What’s special about the new battery tech?

Yutong formally introduced the new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery at an event for new energy commercial vehicles in late March 2024. According to the company, it has zero degradation through the initial 1,000 cycles.

More impressively, it boasts a 932,000 mile (1.5 million km), 15-year warranty. It can also support different electric vehicles across various segments, such as buses, light trucks, and heavy trucks. Initially, it will support impending EVs from Yutong Bus and Yutong Heavy Industries.

Yutong’s other battery promises 1M km, 10-year lifespan

Apart from the long-life battery with CATL, Yutong has also announced a power battery with a 1 million km, 10-year lifespan.

For context, Yutong is currently one of the largest bus makers in China. After its 10-year partnership with CATL since 2012, it signed another deal in early August 2022 to extend their collaboration.

Yutong and CATL formally inked a new 10-year strategic cooperation framework deal in Zhengzhou, Henan province, which houses Yutong’s headquarters.

This long-standing partnership between CATL and Yutong signifies a huge advancement in the electric vehicle industry. It paves the way for innovative batteries with longer lifespans and improved reliability. The partnership advances their positions at the forefront of the electric vehicle push amid the global shift to green mobility.
