Chinese battery leader CATL is set to bring its major battery recycling program to the European and North American power battery industry.

Notably, this move is part of the company’s wider strategy of expanding its battery recycling operations to other continents beyond its home country. Its impending presence in these key markets will undoubtedly aid the company in defending its leading position for six consecutive years already.

CATL’s battery recycling program

The Chinese battery maker already funded its battery recycling program with billions of dollars and gained significant returns.

CATL’s website displays a flow chart of its battery recycling process from production through retirement. The company uses some batteries for energy storage before disassembling them to obtain rare metals.

“We believe recycling is a must; otherwise when a vehicle retires, what do you do? It’s polluting soil, difficult, dangerous, and can be explosive.”

Ni Jun, CATL Chief Manufacturing Officer

Remarkably, its battery recycling process is capable of reclaiming the following critical minerals in batteries:

  • Almost 100% of nickel, cobalt, and manganese
  • 90% of the lithium

That said, CATL’s battery recycling program significantly advances the battery industry as the abovementioned metals usually demand invasive mining processes to extract.

CATL is reportedly collaborating with an unidentified partner to develop numerous battery recycling plants throughout Europe, with plans to pursue North America right after.

The report cites CATL Chief Manufacturing Officer Ni Jun’s statement that the company is currently finding partners to build its recycling facilities in North America.

This significant expansion plan will undoubtedly aid CATL in strengthening its position as one of the 100 most influential companies in the prestigious Time Magazine list. Apart from that, it can also intensify the competition in the battery industry, making it harder for its rivals to catch up.
