The Golden State’s electric vehicle adoption has been highly progressive compared to other markets in the United States. According to Governor Gavin Newsom, one in every four vehicle sales in California was a zero-emission model (ZEV) in Q2 2023, marking a historic event in the state’s EV industry.
Suppose California succeeds in maintaining this upward trend. In that case, it will be able to hit its target of having electric or hybrid vehicles account for 100% of the state’s new auto sales by 2035. In fact, California managed to top its 1.5 million ZEV sales target early this year, which was 2 years ahead of the set deadline.
“California is showing the world what’s possible – fostering innovation and creating space for an industry to flourish. The proof is in the numbers: 1 in 4 new cars sold in our state are zero-emission – and thanks to our unparalleled incentives that make it cheaper than ever, we’re not leaving anyone behind.”
Governor Gavin Newsom
ZEV sales in Q2 2023
The California Energy Commission (CEC) disclosed that ZEVs accounted for 25.4% of all new vehicle sales in the state to 125,939 units in Q2 2023. This year to date, the sales hit 1,623,211 ZEVs.
It must also be noted that California’s ZEV sales contribute an impressive 34% share in the US market, as Veloz EV Market Report reported.
The Californian government did not anticipate the ZEV industry to hit this sale result until 2025, as its target was to reach the 1.5 million threshold in two years. As mentioned, it already surpassed that target earlier this year, 2 years ahead of its deadline. This remarkable level of EV adoption demonstrates Californian drivers’ high interest in aiding the state’s effort to promote sustainable and green mobility.

California’s lead is unsurprising, given its aggressive efforts in advancing its ZEV industry. The government offers substantial subsidies and rebates for low-income citizens, including more than $10 billion allocation for zero-emission cars, trucks, buses, and charging infrastructures. The state also provides $7,500 tax credits for all-electric vehicle buyers. All these efforts will undoubtedly aid the state to hit its target of registering 5 million ZEVs by 2030.
