The state of California may soon create and require a driver’s license for electric bike owners if it passes Assembly Bill 530 proposed by some state legislators.
The proposed law aims to address the issue of the surge of young electric bike riders on the roads without enough knowledge of traffic laws and safety.
About the Assembly Bill 530
Assembly Bill 530 proposes to mandate an online written test and identification for e-bike riders without a driver’s license. Moreover, it aims to restrict kids below 12 years old from using e-bikes on the roads.
In addition, reports suggest that the law would also include a training program for e-bike owners. It would involve several government organizations, such as the DMV and California Highway Patrol, to teach about road rules through a regular driver’s education course.
“As a mother and a legislator, I believe that we must act to prevent our youth from injuries and educate parents on the promise and responsibility of e-bikes, and AB 530 is another step to increase their safety while sharing the road.”
Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner

This government initiative will arguably dismay many e-bike riders who take advantage of the lack of regulations for the two-wheeler vehicle. However, it must be noted it is indeed important to have some training and knowledge regarding road rules and safety before getting on the state roads.
