Yangwang, the luxury brand of Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD, is now on track to release its new U9 quad-motor supercar on February 25.
BYD claims that the new Yangwang U9 has impressive performance, including an acceleration time of just 2 seconds from 0-60 mph, Car News China reports.
Imminent launch
The Yangwang U9 will mark the second electric vehicle of BYD’s premium electric brand, established in January 2023.
The imminent launch of the electric supercar will follow the launch of its sibling YangWang U8 hard-core SUV, which officially kicked off customer deliveries for $150,000 (1,089,000 yuan) in December last year.
As mentioned, the new U9 EV will hit the market as early as February 25. Considering its remarkable features, it can potentially attract more drivers to join the shift to e-mobility.
For instance, the new Yangwang U9 can “jump, tank turn, or drive on three wheels” owing to its innovative DiSus-X body control system.
Design
The new Yangwang U9 is a two-door coupe that rides on the Chinese automaker’s new e4 platform. It has a length of 4,966 mm, a width of 2,029 mm, and a height of 1295 mm. Meanwhile, its wheelbase measures 2900 mm.
It features 275/35 R21 front & 325/30 R21 rear wheels with a carbon fiber rear spoiler as an option. The supercar sports scissor doors have generous boot space.
It sports a distinctive daytime running light pattern that moves horizontally and vertically, similar to other BYD models like the Seal e-sedan.
Inside, it reflects BYD’s iconic interior design. Its steering wheel offers multiple physical buttons and a couple of thick stalks. It also has three modest-sized screens, including two small units in the driver and passenger’s front and another in the center console.
All that said, the new model mirrors a 2010s legacy car vibe instead of a more contemporary design like its futuristic-looking exterior.
Technical specs
BYD’s YangWang U9 features quad electric motors that generate a combined output of 960 kW (1,287 horsepower). Each motor contributes 240 kW of power. Meanwhile, its maximum torque is rated at a whopping 1280 Nm.
It boasts a top speed of 300 km/h and 0-60 mph acceleration in just 2 secs. Interestingly, it will apparently feature BYD’s LFP Blade battery instead of more expensive ternary (NMC) batteries.
BYD has yet to announce the official pricing of the new YangWang U9, but some reports estimate it to sell at about $A215,000 (1,000,000 RMB).
