Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has officially launched the new Song L all-electric SUV in its home market on Friday, December 15. It sells at a very enticing base price of 189,800 yuan ($26,700).
According to Gizmochina, BYD initially introduced the Song L concept at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show last April to challenge the Tesla Model Y’s popularity. It launched pre-orders on October 13, securing more than 11,000 reservations within just 17 days.
Design
Cars News China suggests that the Song L is currently the most attractive model from BYD to date, featuring the brand’s hunting dragon face and layout.
It rides on the innovative e-platform 3.0 featuring the brand’s technologies like the Disus-C suspension system, cell-to-body battery integration, and an active rear wing.
It also sports frameless doors, concealed door handles, and 20-inch wheels. It is 4840 mm long, 1950 mm wide, and 1560 mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 2930 mm. It offers five body paint options, including orange, light blue, black, white, and gray.
Inside, the new fastback SUV offers a 15.6-inch floating rotatable screen and a 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel just behind the steering wheel. It also has a 50-inch head-up display and the new-gen DiLink system. Interior color options include morning light, white sand beach, and wilderness starry sky.
Technical details
Electrek outlined that the new BYD Song L offers five variants with a CLTC-estimated battery range of 550 km (341 mi) to 662 km (411 mi).
However, it only offers three powertrain configurations, including the following:
- 50 kW with 310 Nm torque
- 230 kW with 360 Nm torque (both RWD)
- AWD 380 kW with 670 Nm peak torque
It also has two LFP Blade battery options: 71.8 kWh and 87.04 kWh. The top-tier variant generates a maximum power of 380 kW (510 hp) from its dual motors and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
Pricing
The BYD Song L has a price range of 189,800 yuan ($26,700) to 249,800 yuan ($35,100). Refer to the table below:
BYD Song L trim | Price | Battery | CLTC Range |
Exceed 550 km | 189,800 yuan ($26,700) | 71.8 kWh | 550 km |
Excellence 550 km | 199,800 yuan ($28,100) | 71.8 kWh | 550 km |
Exceed 662 km | 209,800 yuan ($29,500) | 87.04 kWh | 662 km |

As of December 17, pre-orders for the new BYD Song L have already surpassed the 30,000 threshold. BYD currently offers early customers “financial gifts” such as 0% interest for 24 months or a 15% down payment. In addition, they can also benefit from charging and connectivity offers like free car data and online navigation.
BYD Song L’s low-cost price of $26,700-$35,100 can easily snatch Tesla Model Y customers, considering the latter’s base price of $37,400 with a CLTC-estimated range of up to 554 km (344 mi).
